ROHNERT PARK— The 12
th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves swept the visiting SF State Gators this evening in a CCAA match-up at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park, Calif., (25-22, 25-19, 25-14) to improve to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA. Kelsey Hull paced the Seawolves with her 15 kills for a .652 hitting percentage.
"This evening was a tough match," said SF State head coach
Jill Muhe. "Sonoma State is a strong team that is playing very well right now."
SF State (8-7, 3-4 CCAA) hit just .192 for the night with
Jazmine Williams and
Jacquie Brice leading the way each with a .600 percentage. Williams had 6 kills and Brice had three kills to go along with her 28 assists and 9 digs. Williams also had a team high three total blocks for the Gators, who had 5 total team blocks.
Besides Hull's 15 kills, Caylie Seitz added 11 kills for the hosts and Devin Shaver added 22 assists. Sonoma State also had 7 service aces with Madelyn Densberger leading the way with three service aces.
The Gators took a 11-9 lead in the first set, but Sonoma State scored five of the set's seven points to take a 15-13 lead on a Regan Richert kill.
SF State tied the match at 17-17 on a kill by
Melissa Horton, but the Seawolves scored four of the next five points to take a 21-18 lead. They increased their lead to 24-20 on a kill by Kelsey Hull.
The Gators scored the next points to cut the hosts' lead to 24-22 capped by a service ace by
Kelly Ostello. Sonoma State finished off the set on a kill by Richert.
Sonoma State took an 11-4 lead in the second set. The Gators cut the lead to 15-10 as they took advantage of some errors by the hosts, but that is the closest they would get as the Seawolves went on to take the set 25-19 and a 2-0 lead in the match heading into the 10-minute intermission.
After the break, the Seawolves took a 9-3 lead in the third set. SF State cut the deficit to 12-8 on a Williams' kill, but the Seawolves increased their lead to 19-9 capped by a Richert kill.
Back to back kills by Ostello cut the Gator deficit to 19-11, but the Seawolves scored 6 of the final 9 points of the match to take the final set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
SF State will return home to The Swamp this Friday, October 11 as the Gators will host Humboldt State University in a CCAA match-up at 7pm. The Lumberjacks lost in three sets (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) to Cal Poly Pomona this evening in Arcata, Calif.
