Otters Rally Back From 14-Point Deficit to Defeat SF State, 63-58

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal St. Monterey Bay Otters (12-3, 9-3 CCAA) rallied from a 14-point deficit with nine minutes left in the game to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 63-58 at The Kelp Bed in Seaside, Calif., this evening.  The Otters, who were led by Brittani Jefferson's 11 points, won their sixth straight game and moved into third place in the CCAA. 
 
“We battled hard against a quality team,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “We had a our chances in closing out the game, however  again our lack of making free throws in the final three minutes proved to be the difference in the game.”
 
Nicole Hicks, who moved into 13th place on the Gators' all-time scoring list, led the way with a game high 16 points.  Farrah Shokoor recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Lauren Varney chipped in 10 points off the bench.  Shokoor tied her career high as she had seven of the Gators' 12 assists.
 
The first half was evenly played as the Otters held the largest lead of the half, 18-14, with 8:04 when Gabriell Munch hit a three. 
 
SF State ended the half outscoring the Otters 13-7 to take a 27-25 lead into the locker room.
 
Angela Van Sickel's three capped a 14-5 run to open up the second half for the Gators as they took a 42-30 lead in the first eight minutes of the new stanza. 
 
Hicks' jumper with 9:13 to go gave the visitors their largest lead of the game, 53-41. 
 
The Otters chipped away at the Gators' lead and outscored their guests 18-4 in the next six minutes to take a 59-57 lead on a three by Stefanie Corgel. 
 
SF State (9-8, 6-7 CCAA) had four chances to retake the lead but went 0-for-4 from the charity stripe as the Otters finished the final three minutes outscoring the Gators 4-1 to take the 63-58 victory.
 
The Gators, who remain in sixth place in the CCAA, did force 16 turnovers by Cal St. Monterey Bay while holding them to just 39% shooting from the field.
 
“We have to bounce back tomorrow against a very good defensive team in Cal State East Bay,” added Wallace.
 
SF State will travel to Hayward, Calif., tomorrow evening for a conference showdown with the Cal State East Bay Pioneers with a scheduled 5:30 pm tip-off.  The Gators lost 46-38 on November 30 in San Francisco.  Cal State East Bay defeated Sonoma State 57-44 this evening in Hayward.
