SAN FRANCISCO -- Despite San Francisco State picking up two pins on the day against California Baptist, the Gators surrendered a close 22-19 dual to the visiting Lancers.
Isaiah Hurtado and
Conrad Snell each won by fall at their respective weights, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early setback as SF State was unable to compete in the heavyweight competition due to injury.
The Gators drop to 7-7 in dual meets, while CBU improves to 6-10 on the season. Hurtado,
Naveed Bagheri, Snell and
Isaiah Jimenez were all victorious in the loss.
Going in ascending order,
Marc Collier started the dual off at the 125 weight class against Taylor Hall. Both wrestlers battled through a scoreless first period, with Collier picking up the first of the match with an escape. Hall grabbed a takedown to go up 2-1, but Collier reversed the situation to take a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. Hall managed a reversal for himself, and although Collier was able to get another reversal, it was a little too late after Hall snagged a three-point near fall to take the match 8-5.
Down 3-0 on the scoreboard, Hurtado stepped up to the mat at 133 against Dakota Thayer. After registering two takedowns, Hurtado pinned the Lancer at 2:18 to put SF State in the lead at 6-3. The pin marks the third time Hurtado has won by fall, improving his record to 14-4 on the season.
No. 4-ranked Bagheri took an early 4-0 lead in the first period at 141 with a takedown and a two-point near fall, but couldn't lock down CBU's Bradford Gerl. Bagheri held on to the lead to take the match 4-3, bringing his record to 16-6.
Continuing the winning ways for the Gators, Snell grabbed his sixth pin of the year against Cal Baptist's Paul Miller at 149. The win by fall pushes Snell's record to 13-6 overall and added six more points to the SF State column, giving the Gators a 15-3 lead after four matches.
Although CBU took the next match at 157 by decision, Jimenez kept his unbeaten streak alive, extending it to ten matches. Jimenez (165) grabbed two takedowns in the first period, along with a two-point near fall, while only surrendering two escapals to take a 6-2 lead after the first three minutes of action. Jimenez added another two takedowns, a penalty point and a riding time point after staying on top of CBU's Anthony Ballinger for more than a minute, to take a major decision win of 12-4 over Ballinger.
Despite the 19-6 lead, SF State surrendered the next three matches on the mat, including a pivotal 197 bout, and the 285 match due to forfeit to hand the Lancers the 22-19 win.
