SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State's
Mark Lindsay hit a 2-0 pitch to right center to drive in
Dante Smith with the game-winning run in the Gators' 9-8 win over Holy Names this afternoon. Lindsay finished the day 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored. He also threw out two potential base runners as the Gators swept the weekend three-game series from the Hawks.
Lindsay put the Gators on the board with a two-run two-out single to right center to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Carter Loud started the inning with a two-out infield single and advanced to second when
Miguel Flores reached base on a fielding error. They both advanced a base on a double steal and scored on Lindsay's single.
The Gators doubled their lead in the fourth inning as they scored twice on just two hits.
Randy Villa led off the inning reaching base after being hit by a pitch. He went to second on a sacrifice by Joseph Chedid. With one out, Villa went to third when
Jordan Mullins reached base on an error by the Hawks. Then with two outs, Villa scored on a RBI single by
Grady Espinosa. Mullins scored on a run scoring single by
Carter Loud.
SF State made it 5-1 Gators on a sacrifice fly by Lindsay that drove in Loud, who reached base on a one-out walk.
The score remained 5-1 Gators until the Hawks' eighth inning as Holy Names (1-6) scored four runs to tie the game at 5-5. Dan Catalan's two-out bases clearing double to right field tied the game for the visitors.
SF State came right back and took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Espinosa had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice by Loud. Flores was intentionally walked and Lindsay had an infield single to load the bases.
AJ Pianto came through as he hit the first pitch he saw to center field to drive in Espinosa with the go-ahead run with a single to give the Gators a 6-5 lead. Villa hit an infield single to drive in Flores with the second run of the inning. Lindsay came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Chedid as the hosts took an 8-5 lead.
Holy Names came right back and scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning with Hunter Dodson's two-run double down the left field line capped the inning for the Hawks as they tied the game at 8-8.
But once again, the Gators came back with
Dante Smith leading off the inning reaching base when he was hit by a pitch. He went to second on Espinosa's single through the left side. Flores was intentionally walked to load the bases for Lindsay. The sophomore catcher hit the third pitch he saw to right center for a game-winning single that drove in Smith for the game-winner.
Peter Reyes (1-1) recorded the win in relief for the Gators. He pitched one inning, giving up three hits and three runs while striking out one and walking three.
Ryan DeJesus started the game and pitched five innings, giving up 7 hits and one run while striking out 7 and walking two.
Brian Glynn (0-1) picked up the loss for the Hawks pitching one inning of relief, giving up two hits and one run while walking one.
SF State managed 14 hits on the day with Lindsay and Espinosa each with three hits apiece. Mullins also had a multiple-hit day with two hits. Loud and Flores each scored twice for the Gators, who will return to the diamond this weekend in Los Angeles. The Gators will open up CCAA play with a four-game series at Cal State L.A. beginning with a 2pm starting single game this Friday, February 15 at Reeder Field.
