6-Run Eighth Inning Dooms Gators in 9-2 Loss

Jordan Mullins Was 2-for-4 with a Run Scored This Afternoon
Box Score LOS ANGELES----  Cal State L.A. scored six runs on just two hits and four Gator errors to break open an one-run game and give the hosts a 9-2 CCAA victory in both team's conference opener of the 2013 season.  Jordan Sechler (2-0) pitched a complete game victory for the Golden Eagles as he struck out five batters and walked no one as the Golden Eagles improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
 
The Golden Eagles took a three run lead in the fifth inning with James Wharton's two-out two-run home run being the big hit of the inning.  Niko Garcia led off the inning with a single to left field and went to third on a single by Scott Masik. Garcia scored the game's first run when Jeremy Weber reached base on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Wharton hit a 1-1 pitch over the fence in right center, for his third home run of the season, to give Cal State L.A. a 3-0 lead.
 
The score remained 3-0 Golden Eagles until the Gator eighth inning.  Jordan Mullin, who finished the day 2-for-4, hit a single through the right side to lead off the inning.  He scored on a one-out double by Grady Espinosa.   Mark Lindsay then cut the deficit in half as he hit a two-out single to right field to drive in Espinosa. 
 
That is when the Golden Eagles broke open the game in the bottom of the eighth.  Cal State L.A. scored six runs on two hits and four Gator errors to increase their lead to 9-2.
 
Sechler retired the Gators in order in the top of the ninth as Cal State L.A. took game one of this weekend's four-game series 9-2. 
 
Wharton and Masik led the Golden Eagles' hitting attack with two hits apiece. 
 
SF State (3-5, 0-1 CCAA) had 8 hits on the day lead by Lindsay and Mullins each with two apiece.  Zack Malik (1-1) recorded the loss as he pitched 7.1 innings, giving up nine hits and 6 runs (four earned) while striking out two and walking two. 
 
The two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am for a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Cal State L.A.'s campus.  The series will conclude this Sunday at 11am with a single nine-inning game.
