LOS ANGELES— The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (5-5, 3-0 CCAA) swept a conference doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators 6-5 (10) and 9-2 this afternoon at Reeder Field on the campus of Cal State L.A.
Dillon Meyer had five hits on the day for the Gators including a triple while driving in a run and scoring three times and stealing two bases.
Cal State L.A. rallied back twice from deficits to take game one 6-5 in ten innings of this afternoon's doubleheader. The game was scoreless until the eighth inning as both the Gators'
Ryan DeJesus and the Golden Eagles' Omar Jimenez had great starts for their respective teams.
In the Gator half of the eighth, Jimenez was relieved after pitching seven innings of five-hit ball while striking out two.
Grady Espinosa and
Carter Loud led off the inning with back to back singles. Espinosa crossed home plate for the game's first run on a RBI single to right center by
Miguel Flores. Loud scored the inning's second run on a ground out by the Gators.
Cal State L.A. came right back though in its half of the seventh. Manny Acosta had a lead-off single up the middle. DeJesus struck out the next Golden Eagle hitter and then was relieved by
Nolan Sheridan. Scott Masik then doubled the second pitch he saw going down the line to put runners at second and third with one out. Jeremy Weber hit a 1-2 pitch up the middle for a two-run single. Sheridan retired the next two batters to end the Golden Eagle rally.
SF State came right back and took the lead with a three-run inning.
Randy Villa had a lead-off single.
Dante Smith came in to pinch run for Villa, who went to second on a sacrifice by
Peter Quigley.
Jordan Mullins then was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second.
Dillon Meyer then put the Gators back on top with a run scoring single which Smith scored on to give SF State a 3-2 lead. Espinosa then drove in Mullins with an infield single and Meyer scored on a single by Loud to increase the Gators' lead to 5-2.
Cal State L.A. did not cave in as they came back with three runs on just one hit to send the game into extra innings. Tyler Christian and Ryan Cooperstone each were hit by a pitch to start the inning. Then still with no outs, Manny Acosta hit a 2-2 pitch to center field for a two-run double. Acosta went to third on an error by the Gators on the play. He then tied the game as he scored on a sacrifice fly by David Trejo.
James Wharton (1-0) then retired the Gators in order in the tenth to set up the bottom of the inning.
Ryan led off the inning with a single to center field and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a fly out to center field by Wharton. SF State then loaded the bases for Cooperstone who was hit by a pitch on the first pitch he saw to drive in Ryan with the game-winning run.
DeJesus recorded the no-decision in the start for the Gators. He went 7.1 innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out 5 and walking two.
Trevor Diskin (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Gators.
Wharton recorded the win for Cal State L.A., pitching 1.2 innings in relief, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out one.
Acosta led the Golden Eagle hitters going 3-for-4 driving in two runs and scoring twice.
SF State (3-6, 0-3 CCAA) had 12 hits with Meyer and Loud leading the way each with three hits.
Then in the night cap, the Golden Eagles took a 6-0 lead after two innings as they erupted for five runs in the second inning capped by a Wharton two-out two-run single.
The Gators got on the board in the third as Meyer scored on a two-out single by
Mark Lindsay. Meyer reached base with one out as he was hit by a pitch.
Cal State L.A. added one more run in its half of the third inning and two more in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead.
The Gators scored another run in the fifth as Meyer, who finished the night cap 2-for-3 scoring both of the visitors' runs, opened the inning with a lead-off triple and scored on a ground out by Espinosa.
Randy Villa and Espinosa each had two hits for the Gators.
Brandon Quintero (2-1) picked up the win for the Golden Eagles, pitching five innings of seven-hit ball, striking out three and walking two while giving up two runs.
Jack Veronin (0-1) took the loss for the Gators.
The two teams will conclude this weekend's CCAA opening four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting single nine-inning game at Reeder Field on Cal State L.A.'s campus.
