CARSON, Calif.--- The visiting SF State Gators were able to hang on to defeat the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros 58-49 behind their defense this evening at the Torodome in Carson, Calif. Farrah Shokoor and Angela Van Sickel each had 13 points to lead the way for the visitors. SF State held the Toros to just 28% shooting from the field and forced 16 turnovers.

"We got a much needed win against a very well coached team," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "Our first half offensive execution was quality; however, we were not able to have the same flow in the second half.” "It wasn't pretty; yet we were able to hang on."

With the win, the Gators remain in a tie for seventh place with Cal State San Bernardino with just two weeks left in the regular season.  They also move two games ahead of Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State who are tied for ninth place.  The top eight teams on March 1 will advance to the 2013 CCAA Basketball Championships which start on Tuesday, March 5 at campus sites.

Besides Van Sickel and Shokoor's 13 points, Lauren Varney chipped in 10 points for the Gators.  Breanne Garcia paced the Toros (7-15, 6-12 CCAA) with 13 points off the bench.

The Gators opened up the game outscoring their hosts 16-8 in the first six minutes.  Jamie Robinson's jumper capped a 5-0 run by the Toros, but the Gators came right back and went on a 7-0 run to take a 25-13 lead on a Van Sickel jumper with 7:37 left in the half.

SF State increased its lead to 33-18 on a Lyneeka Boyd jumper with just 3:23 to go in the half.  Michaela Booker's two made free throws gave the guests a 37-23 lead heading into the locker room.

The Toros opened the second half outscoring the Gators 13-4 to cut the deficit to just 41-36 in the first six minutes.

SF State though pushed the lead back to double digits, 50-40, with 7:36 left in the game on a Shokoor lay-up and the Gators never looked back as they held on for the 58-49 victory.

The Gators had 16 assists on the night including six by Jennifer Le while they went 6-for-9 from the charity stripe (Booker and Varney each a perfect two-for-two).

SF State will return to the court this Friday, February 22 for the Gators' final two home games of the regular season.  They will host Cal Poly Pomona this Friday and Humboldt State a week from this evening.  Tip-off for both games is set for 5:30pm PST at The Swamp.  Prior to Saturday's game, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their own in Michaela Booker, Lyneeka Boyd, Desiree Collins and Nicole Hicks
