Gators' Rally Falls Short in 61-54 Loss to CPP

Angela Van Sickel Had 18 Points in the Gators' Loss to CPP This Evening

SAN FRANCISCO---   SF State's rally fell short this evening as the Gators lost 61-54 to Cal Poly Pomona despite Angela Van Sickel's team high 18 points. Cal Poly Pomona (12-11, 10-9 CCAA) finished the game on a 13-0 run to key its 7-point win over the Gators. JJ Judge paced the Broncos with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
 
“This was a frustrating loss for us this evening,” said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “We have to come back tomorrow night and be a smarter team and learn how to close out games - the most important game of the year is tomorrow night.”
 
Besides Van Sickel's 18 points, Farrah Shokoor added 14 points and Nicole Hicks chipped in 11 points for the hosts. 
 
JJ Judge had 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Broncos.
 
Ashley Boggs' old fashioned three-point play gave Cal Poly Pomona a 15-7 early lead in the first half. The Broncos held on to that lead for the most of the first half including 22-16 with three minutes left in the first half. 
 
SF State (11-12, 8-11 CCAA) went on a 10-4 run to tie the game at 26-26 on an Angela Van Sickel three with just 39 ticks to go in the first stanza. 
 
Boggs hit a three to send the game into the half with a 29-26 Bronco lead.
 
Cal Poly Pomona started the second half outscoring its hosts 10-5  in the first seven minutes to take a 39-33 lead. 
 
SF State then would not back down as the Gators tied the game at 43-43 on a lay-up by Van Sickel at the 8:48 mark. 
 
Van Sickel came up big as she started a 7-0 run by the Gators with a three to give the hosts a 54-48 lead. 
 
Cal Poly Pomona came right back as the Broncos finished on a 13-0 run to take the 61-54 victory.
 
The Gators will return home tomorrow evening for the final time of the regular season as they host Humboldt State in their Senior Night.  Prior to the game, the Gators will recognize its four seniors in Lyneeka Boyd, Michaela Booker, Desiree Collins and Nicole Hicks
