Otters Sweep Gators in CCAA DH

Grady Espinosa HIt His First HR as a Gator In SF State's DH
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO----- The visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (11-3, 6-1) swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader from the SF State Gators this afternoon at Maloney Field, winning 7-0 and 6-4. Grady Espinosa had two hits in the second game of the doubleheader for the Gators, including a two-run home run.

In the opener, SF State (3-12, 0-7) failed to get anything going offensively from start to finish as CSUMB's pitching, led by starter Will Anderson, delivered a solid performance on the mound.  The Otters first took the lead in the top of the second with a two-out rally.  After CSUMB loaded the bases, Jason Merjano cashed in on a Gator fielding error, scoring two and giving the Otters a 2-0 lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay added insurance runs soon after as the Otters scored one run an inning from the fifth inning on, slowly extending their lead to 7-0, which ended up being the final score of the game.  Anderson pitched seven strong innings, allowing only four hits, two walks, and no runs while striking out seven.  With the win, Anderson improves to 2-2 on the season.

Gators starting pitcher Zack Malik (1-2) gets stuck with the loss after turning in a solid performance of his own.  Malik went six innings, surrendering seven hits, three walks and one earned run while striking out four.

The only extra-base hit of the game for SF State came off the bat of David Villa, who also had two hits in the opener.

In the nightcap, CSUMB capitolized on the momentum from game one as the Otters struck quickly in the top half of the first.  Brian Haggett tripled in the first run of the game and later came in to score on a Mark Hurley single down the third base line giving the Otters an early 2-0 lead.

SF State's offense was finally able put runs on the board in the bottom half of the third after a hit batsmen and a couple walks loaded the bases.  Villa continuing to swing a hot bat, singled to left field, driving in both Dillon Meyer and Espinosa to even the game at 2-2.

After the Otters scored twice in the top of the fifth inning, the Gators quickly responded in the latter half of the inning.  After Danny Souza leadoff with a walk, Espinosa crushed a two-run homerun over the left-center field fence, evening up the game once again at 4-4.

After going seven full innings, the game went into extras where the Otters were able to take control of the game from there.  After loading the bases in the top of the eighth, CSUMB took advantage of a Gator fielding error and a fielder's choice, giving them a 6-4 lead, which end up being the final score of the game.

Gator starting pitcher Ryan De Jesus recorded the no-decision after going six innings, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and one walk.  Peter Reyes takes the loss, dropping to 1-2, after giving up two runs over two innings.

CSUMB starter Jeff Owen also recorded the no-decision after surrendering four runs over five innings.  Jordan Helmkamp (1-0) gets his first win on the season while A.J. Quintero (3) records the save.

The two teams will wrap up the four-game series with an 11am starting time tomorrow back down in Seaside, Ca. at the Otter Sports Complex.
