Gators drop disappointing loss to Jacks

2013 Women's Basketball seniors Desiree Collins, Michaela Booker, Nicole Hicks and Lyneeka Boyd with Coach Wallace
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- Shots did not seem to want to fall for the SF State Gators as they dropped a 67-50 loss to Humboldt State Saturday night. The loss drops the Gators to 11-13 overall, 8-12 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as SF State concludes its home competitions. The Jacks improve to 10-16 overall, 6-14 in conference action with the win.

"It was a very disappointing loss tonight," said head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "We had a lot riding on tonight's Senior Night with the opportunity to clinch a playoff bid, but we didn't show up to play. We lacked energy and gave up one of our worst shooting nights this year. We played a lot better last night. We didn't deserve to win. We just need to get better."

Two Gators finished in double figures, led by Farrah Shokoor with 17 points and Michaela Booker with 13 points. SF State struggled to grab rebounds off the boards, being out-rebounded 52-to-37 by the Jacks. The rebounding effort from HSU was shared across the board, but Lisa Petty snagged a game-high 20 points, followed by 15 points from Tiana Maxwell, to lift the Jacks over the host Gators.

Both teams battled at the start of the competition in hopes of obtaining a lead to keep the other team at bay. SF State managed to take a nine-point lead 10 minutes into the contest after Lauren Varney initiated an 8-0 run to put the Gators up 20-11.

The lead didn't last long, however, as the Jacks answered with an eight-point run of their own to put the game within one point at 20-19. The Gators held onto the lead heading into the last five minutes before the break, but a layup from Humboldt State's Kelly Kime tied the game at 29-29 heading into halftime.

Just like the opening minutes of the first half, the first three minutes of the second period went back-and-forth between the two squads before the Jacks took a five-point lead with 16:22 left to play. The Gators managed to bring the game within one at 40-39, but couldn't overturn the score.

SF State only hit five shots from the field for a 16.7 shooting percentage and one shot from the perimeter off eight attempts. The Jacks took advantage of the Gators' missed opportuinities, extending their lead into double digits. HSU grabbed as high as a 19-point lead with less than a minute left to play and although Shalene Jackson finished a jumper from Erica Lohrenz, the Lumberjacks held onto the 67-50 victory.

Four seniors were honored prior to the match as they played their final collegiate home competition at The Swamp: Nicole Hicks, Michaela Booker, Lyneeka Boyd and Desiree Collins.

SF State will conclude the regular season on the road with a Thursday contest at Cal State San Bernardino and Friday matchup at UC San Diego. Both games will tip off at 5:30 p.m.
