No. 27 Seawolves Blank Gators, 6-0

Mark Lindsay Had One of the Gators' 5 Hits This Afternoon
Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif.— The 27th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves (1-0) defeated the visiting SF State Gators 6-0 this afternoon in their home opener.  Five Seawolves combined to pitch a five-hit shutout over their guests.
 
Sam Montgomery hit a one-out run single up the middle to score Jeffrey Boulware to give Sonoma State the 1-0 lead.  Boulware led off the inning reaching base on a walk.  He advanced to second on a single by Steven Filippi and then scored on Montgomery's single.
 
SF State (0-4) had a chance to score in the top of the fifth inning.  Justin Lamb had a lead-off single to left field. He advanced to second when AJ Pianto was hit by a pitch.  They both advanced a base on a sacrifice by Peter Quigley.  Jayson Richards then struck out the next batter and induced the final Gator batter of the inning to ground out to short to end the Gator rally.
 
The 27th ranked Seawolves broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning.  Filippi, who finished the day 2-for-4, started the inning with a one-out single.  Then back to back singles by Montgomery and Garrett Gooselaw loaded the bases with just one out.  Tyler Glen walked to bring in Filippi.  Garrett Schwartz was hit by a pitch to bring in the second run of the inning. The third and final run of the inning was brought on by a ground out by Scott Harkin to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
 
The Seawolves added two more runs in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead into the final two innings.
 
Sonoma State shut down the Gators in the final two innings to take the 6-0 non-conference win.
 
George Asmus (1-0) picked up the win in the start for Sonoma State.  Asmus pitched four innings, giving up two hits while striking out six and walking one.  Four Seawolves pitched the final six innings, giving up just two hits, striking out five and walking just two batters.
 
Jack Veronin (0-1) recorded the loss for the Gators.  The junior pitcher gave up four hits and a run while walking one in three innings of work. 
 
Besides Filippi's two hits, two other Seawolves had two hits apiece in Montgomery and Gooselaw as the hosts had 12 hits as a team.
 
Five different Gators had one hit with Dillon Meyer reaching base on his second double of the season. 
 
SF State grounded into four double plays and stranded six runners on base.
 
The Gators will return home to Maloney Field this weekend for a non-conference three-game series with Holy Names University.  Game one will be this Friday, February 8 with first pitch scheduled for 2pm PST.
