SAN FRANCISCO --- The San Francisco State Gators (1-4) defeated the visiting Holy Names Hawks 2-0 this afternoon to record their first win of the season. The trio of Zack Malik, Nolan Sheridan and Peter Reyes combined for a four-hit shutout win in a dominant defensive effort over HNU (1-4) this afternoon at Maloney Field to start the first of a three-game series.
Malik (1-0) picked up the win for the Gators after throwing five shut-out innings, yielding three hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Sheridan added three scoreless innings in relief before handing the ball to closer Reyes, who preserved the shutout and recorded his first save of the season.
Jesse Savage (1-1) records the loss for the Hawks. The junior right-hander went six and two thirds innings giving up eight hits and two runs.
SF State combined for ten hits on the game, led by both Carter Loud and Joe Chedid, who each had three hits and an RBI. Dante Smith wasn't far behind the two and finished the day with two hits and a run.
HNU made things interesting early on after quickly loading the bases with one out in the top half of the first inning. However, Malik buckled down to strike out his next two batters, getting out of the early jam and keeping the Hawks off the board.
Chedid got the game going for SF State in the bottom half of the fifth inning with a leadoff single, advancing to second on an infield single by Smith. After a fielder's choice cut down Chedid at third, Loud broke the scoreless tie with a single to center field, scoring Smith.
SF State went to tack on an insurance run in the following inning when Chedid singled up the middle to score Randy Villa from second.
The two teams will continue this weekend's three-game series tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. start at SF State's Maloney Field. The series will conclude on Sunday, also slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
