Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State's
Miguel Flores scored what proved to be the game-wining run off a two-out RBI single by Joseph Chedid in the bottom of the seventh in the Gators' 6-4 come-from-behind win over the visiting Holy Names University Hawks. Each team notched 11 hits apiece, but the Gators held on to take game two of the three-game series. Flores finished the day 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored along with a stolen base as the Gators improved to 2-4.
Peter Reyes recorded his second save in as many days while
Trevor Diskin (1-1) picked up the win.
The Gators jumped on the board fast in the bottom-half of the first inning when five of the first six batters reached base to start an early rally. Both Flores and
Mark Lindsay registered hits that sent runners to the plate for the 2-0 lead. HNU starting pitcher Jimmy Doyle only lasted one-third of an inning before handing the ball off to Max Eggleson, who retired the next two Gators in a row to limit the damage and only put the Hawks down by two runs.
The Hawks responded right back in their next chance at bat, putting down back-to-back singles from Jake Westhrope and Caleb Parker to open the inning. A sacrifice fly deep to left field off the bat of Dominic Morbidelli scored the first runner and a single by Tyler Truitt evened up the game at 2-2 after just an inning and a half.
SF State took advantage of a Hawk mistake in the bottom of the sixth when Lindsay reached on base off a throwing error. Lindsay rounded the bases and came around to score take the lead back 3-2 before HNU could find the third putout.
After each teams exchanged two runs in the seventh to put the score at 5-4 in favor of SF State, the Gators tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when
Jordan Mullins scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice-fly off the bat of Lindsay to pull ahead 6-4. The Hawks made things interesting in the ninth when desperation kicked in and Zach Verlaan doubled to center field, but Flores collected back-to-back ground balls to get the batters out at first, ending the game with the 6-4 Gator victory.
SF State starting pitcher
Trae Lopez held the mound for two innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and two strikeouts. Junior pitcher Trevor Deskin recorded the win in relief, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Peter Reyes notched his second save of the season in back-to-back games.
The loss goes to HNU's Jayse Banister, who allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks over two innings
