SF State breaks losing streak with Warrior defeat

Farrah Shokoor led the Gators with 16 points, nine rebounds and six steals in the 73-58 win Saturday night.
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- Coming into Saturday night's competition, SF State wanted to snap a three-game losing streak and get back into the run for post-season action. The Gators powered through 40 minutes of play to defeat the visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors 73-58 to improve to 10-10 overall, 7-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Despite the victory, head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace wanted more out of his team, who came close to upsetting No. 11-ranked Chico State Friday night.

"We have to mature as a team because we are lacking the integrity needed on a consitant level," said Wallace. "There were two different teams that played this weekend as we did not resemble the team that played on Friday night."

Farrah Shokoor led the Gators with 16 points and nine rebounds, just one rebound shy of a double-double, while also accounting for six of the Gators' 19 steals on the night. Nicole Hicks and Angela Van Sickel also finished with double-digit points, with Hicks picking up 14 points and Van Sickel adding another 10 points.

For the Warriors, Lauren Godde grabbed a game-high 23 points and 12 boards for the only double-double of the game.

Both teams started a little slow with neither one finishing a basket from the field for the first three minutes, until Van Sickel found the first field goal of the match to put the Gators up 3-1. SF State went on a 8-2 run to take an 11-3 lead, while keeping the Warriors scoreless from the field for almost 10 minutes. Godde finally gave the Warriors their first live-action bucket at 10:15 and finished the and-one as she was fouled in the process to put the score at 11-6.

The Gators continued to hold momentum in their hands, but Cal State Stanislaus brought the game within four points with 1:19 before halftime after Godde finished two free throw shots. Van Sickel responded by making the first three-point shot of the night as the clock hit the one minute mark. Shokoor and Hicks added layups in the next 60 seconds of the period to send the teams into halftime with SF State posting a 28-17 lead over the Warriors.

Katie Staack finished the Warriors' first shot from the perimeter to start the second half, cutting the lead into single digits, but Hicks increased it once more with a jumper off an assist from Lauren Varney

With the score at 34-24, the Gators scored 16 unanswered points to take a commanding 50-24 advantage before CSUS could stop the bleeding. SF State continued to build, grabbing as high as a 27-point lead, but the Warriors made a late surge in the final minutes of action. Trailing 68-43, Godde initiated an eight-point run to bring the score within 17 points. The Warriors managed to cut it to 15 points, but couldn't slice the lead any further, ending the game at 73-58 in favor of the Gators.

SF State heads back out on the road as the Gators travel to face Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Gators first take on the Golden Eagles on Friday, Feb. 15, before turning around the next night to challenge the Toros. Both games are slated for 5:30 p.m. tip-offs.

"We need to have better focus this week heading into critical games against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills," said Wallace, who's team still has hopes of a post-season run as the final weeks of CCAA play come into sight.
