Broncos Take Game One, 8-1

AJ Almaraz Was 3-For-4 for the Gators In their Season Opener Against CPP This Afternoon
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos pounded out 14 hits and scored 8 runs in game one of this weekend's four-game CCAA series at SF State's Maloney Field to defeat the Gators 8-1.  Six different Broncos batters had multiple-hit days led by Jason Padlo and Joseph Eusebio who each had three hits.  Max Bethell (3-2) picked up the win for Cal Poly Pomona, who improves to 15-9 overall and 8-9 in the CCAA.
 
The visitors scored their first run in the top of the first inning as Bo Walter scored on a fielder's choice by Donald Walter.  Bo Walter reached on a one-out infield single, stole second and went to third on a single by Jordan Whitman.  He then scored when Donald Walter reached on a fielder's choice.
 
The Broncos broke the game open with a five-run second inning capped by a two-out-two-run home run to left field by Whitman, his third of the season.  Earlier in the inning, Trevor Magno had a two-run double as Cal Poly Pomona took a 5-0 lead. 
 
SF State (8-13, 5-8 CCAA) scored its only run in the bottom of the third inning.  AJ Almaraz, who finished the afternoon, 3-for-4, had a one-out infield single.  He went to second on a bunt single by Dillon MeyerCarter Loud walked to load the bases for Grady Espinosa, who drove in Almaraz with an infield single.  That is the only run that the Gators would score as Bethell induced the next two batters to fly out and ground out.
 
Cal Poly Pomona added two insurance runs (one in the fifth and the other in the seventh).  The Broncos' run in the seventh came on an inside the park home run by Padlo, who his first of the season. 
 
The Gators had another chance to put a run on the board in the fifth inning.  Almaraz led off with a single and went to second when Loud was hit by a pitch with one out.  Bethell then got the next two SF State batters to ground out and fly out to end the inning.
 
SF State led off its bottom of the seventh inning with two runners reaching base on a walk to AJ Pianto and a single by Almaraz.  The Gators stranded both runners as the next three batters flew out to end the inning.
 
Padlo was 3-for-5 with a RBI and scoring twice and Eusebio was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. 
 
Bethell pitched 6.1 innings, giving up five hits and one run while striking out three and walking four.  The Bronco pitching duo of Ryan Dunn and JJ Franklin pitched the final 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and walking no one.
 
Trevor Diskin (1-3) recorded the loss for the Gators.  Trae Lopez pitched 3.2 innings of relief, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out two and walking one.  Eric Watts pitched the final four innings, giving up two this and one run while striking out one and walking one.
 
The two teams will continue their four-game series tomorrow morning with an 11am starting doubleheader at Maloney Field.  The series will conclude with a single nine-inning game this Sunday beginning at 11am, also at Maloney Field.
