Broncos Take Series Finale, 11-1

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (17-10, 10-10 CCAA) scored 11 runs in three innings as they defeated the SF State Gators 11-1 this afternoon in this weekend's conference series finale at Maloney Field.  The Broncos scored four runs in the top of the first inning on five straight hits capped by a two-run home run by Chris Carlson and the visitors never looked back as they took the series 3-1.
 
Cody Ponce (3-0) pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up six hits and striking out 8 en route to the victory.  Andy Amaro pitched the final two innings of relief, giving up one hit and one unearned run while striking out three and walking one. 
 
The first four Bronco batters of the game each singled to give Cal Poly Pomona a 2-0 lead.  Then with the count 2-2 and one out, Carlson hit a shot over the right field fence to increase the Bronco lead to 4-0.  The home run was his second of the season.
 
SF State's Dillon Meyer led off the Gators' half of the first with a single to center field.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Carter Loud and went to third on a ground out, but Ponce struck out the next SF State batter.
 
Cal Poly Pomona added two more runs in the fourth to increase its lead to 6-0.  The Broncos scored five more times in the eighth on four hits to take an 11-0 lead. 
 
The Gators finally scored in the bottom of the ninth.  Grady Espinosa reached on a fielding error by the Broncos.  He went to second on a one-out walk to Danny Souza.  Then with two outs, Joe Chedid hit a 1-0 pitch up the middle to drive in Espinosa to make the score 11-1.  Amaro retired the next Gator batter to preserve the 11-1 Bronco win.
 
The Broncos pounded out 13 hits on the day with four different batters with two hits apiece.  Carlson and Nicholas Cooksey had drove in two runs for Cal Poly Pomona.
 
Paul Moeller (0-1) took the loss for the Gators in the start.  Jack Jorgensen pitched three scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one.  Peter Reyes also pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for SF State, who will return home this Friday, March 22 at 3pm when the Gators (9-15, 6-10 CCAA)  host Sonoma State with a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
