SAN FRANCISCO – The 24
th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves (16-7, 8-5 CCAA) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score four unanswered runs in the final five innings to defeat the SF State Gators 4-2 in ten innings this afternoon in game one of this weekend's four-game CCAA series. The two teams will move the series to Rohnert Park, Calif., for an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow morning.
The Gators used small ball to score their first run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs,
Grady Espinosa hit a two-out infield single. He then stole second base.
Miguel Flores walked to put runners on first and second with two outs. Espinosa advanced to third on a wild pitch and stole home to score the game's first run.
SF State (9-16, 6-11 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as
AJ Almaraz led off the inning reaching second on a Seawolf two-base throwing error. He went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right field by
Joe Chedid.
The score remained 2-0 Gators until the Seawolf sixth inning. Scott Harking had a lead-off triple to open up the inning and scored on Marcus Kimura's double down the left field line to cut the Gator lead to 2-1. Devon Zenn was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Then
Nolan Sheridan came in to relief of Gator starter,
Ryan DeJesus, and retired the next two Seawolf batters after Devon Zenn was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Nathan Bernstein walked to bring in Kimura to tie the game at 2-2. Sheridan retired the next Seawolf as he flied out to left field.
The score remained tied at 2-2 until Sonoma State's tenth inning. Zenn led off the inning with a single to right field and went to third on a double by Garrett Schwartz. With one out, Zenn scored on a wild pitch to give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead. Then with two outs, Steven Moen drove in Schwartz with an insurance run to increase Sonoma State's lead to 4-2.
SF State led off the bottom of the inning reaching base on a hit batsman to Almaraz. Then
Dillon Meyer hit a line drive right back to the pitcher and then he doubled up Almaraz up at first. Steven Zaharias (1-1) then retired the next Gator batter on a ground out to preserve the 4-2 come-from-behind win by Sonoma State.
Zaharaias recorded the win in relief for Sonoma State, pitching three scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one. George Asmus had the no-decision for the visitors, pitching seven innings, giving up five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking one.
SF State had six hits on the day led by Chedid's 2-for-5 performance.
Ryan DeJesus started the game and went five innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out one and walking two. Sheridan pitched three innings of relief, giving up one hit and walking three.
Peter Reyes (1-3) picked up the loss in relief for SF State, pitching two innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out two and walking one.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow morning in Rohnert Park, Calif., with an 11am starting doubleheader. The series will conclude back at SF State's Maloney Field with a single nine-inning game with a scheduled first pitch set for 11am.
