Gators Swept by #24 Sonoma State

ROHNERT , Calif.—   The 24th ranked Sonoma State Seawolves swept a doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon 4-0 and 2-1 at Seawolf Diamond in Rohnert Park, Calif.   With the sweep, Sonoma State improves to 18-7 overall and 10-5 in the CCAA.
 
In game one, the Gators were blanked by Sonoma State 4-0 as the Seawolves scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Justin Serrao opened the inning with a double down the left field and advanced to third on Scott Harkin's ground out.  Marcus Kimura walked and then Serrao scored on a balk.  Devon Zenn walked to put runners on first and second with one out and advanced a base on a wild pitch. 
 
Garrett Schwartz doubled home Kimura and Zenn scored on a ground out by Nathan Bernstein.
 
The Gators had a rally in the third.  AJ Pianto led off the inning with a single and went to second on a one-out single by AJ Almaraz.  Sonoma State's Harmen Sidhu then struck out the next Gator batter and induced the next batter to ground out to end the inning.
 
Sonoma State added an insurance run in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
 
SF State had another rally stopped in the sixth inning.  Grady Espinosa had a one-out walk and went to second on a single up the middle by Miguel FloresMark Lindsay walked to load the bases with one out.  Randy Villa then lined out to first base to an unassisted double play.
 
Robert Raymos came on relief of Sidhu to pitch two scoreless innings of relief, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out one.  Sidhur improved to 5-1, pitching 7 innings of five-hit ball, striking out 8 and walking two.
 
Four Seawolf batters had two hits apiece and Schwartz drove in two of the Seawolves' four runs.
 
Flores led the Gator hitting attack with two hits and Jack Jorgensen (0-2) recorded the loss in the start for SF State.  Trevor Diskin pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the visitors, giving up six hits, walking two and striking out two.
 
In the night cap, Sonoma State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Jackson Stogner led off the bottom of the inning reaching first on an error.  He went to second on a single by Harkin and advanced to third on a single by Schwartz.  Stogner scored on a sacrifice fly by Zenn to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
 
The score remained 1-0 Sonoma State until the Gator half of the fourth.  Miguel Flores had a lead off double and scored on a one-out single by Justin Lamb to tie the game at 1-1.
 
SF State (9-18, 6-13 CCAA) had a chance to take the lead in its half of the fifth when Almaraz walked to open the inning.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Dillon Meyer.  Then with two outs advanced to third as Grady Espinosa reached on an error.  Espinosa stole second to put runners at second and third, but the Seawolves retired the next Gator on a ground out.
 
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning.  With one out, Harkin reached on a throwing error and went to second on a single by Schwartz.  Zenn walked to load the bases with one out.  Kimura came and hit a pinch-hit single on the first pitch he saw to score Harkin with the game-winning run.
 
Austin Wiggins (2-1) picked up the win in relief as he pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits while striking out three and walking one. 
 
Zack Malik (2-3) suffered the loss for the Gators as he pitched 6.1 innings, giving up nine hits and two unearned runs, striking out five and walking three. 
 
Three different Gators had two hits apiece in Espinosa, Flores and Lamb. 
 
The two teams will conclude the four-game series tomorrow morning at SF State's Maloney Field with a nine-inning single game scheduled for an 11am start.
