#10 Chico State Defeats Gators, 7-1, in Game One of Four-Game Weekend Series

SAN FRANCISCO – Behind the trio of Nick Baker, Eric Angerer and Pierson Jeremiah it was the 10th ranked Chico State Wildcats defeating the SF State Gators 7-1 in the first game of this weekend's four-game CCAA series at SF State's Maloney Field.  Baker improved to 5-0 as he pitched 8 innings, giving up six hits and one unearned run while striking out five and walking two.  Angerer and Jeremiah were a combined 6-for-7, driving in three runs and scoring three runs.
 
Angerer put the Wildcats (20-5, 13-4 CCAA) on the board in the top of the first inning.  The Wildcat first baseman led off the game reaching first as he was hit by a pitch.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Jeremiah and scored on a one-out double by Blake Gibbs.
 
Chico State doubled its lead in the third as Angerer scored on a Jeremiah two-out single through the left side.  He reached base on a two-out double down the right field line.  The Wildcats increased their lead to 4-0 after five as they scored one run in the fourth and another in the fifth.
 
SF State (10-19, 7-14 CCAA) had a mini two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning.  As Grady Espinosa reached first on a fielding error by the Wildcats and went to third on a double by Dillon Meyer.  He scored on a single by Miguel Flores that put runners on the corner and cut the Wildcat lead to 4-1.  Baker induced the next Gator batter to ground out to short to end the rally.
 
The Wildcats took a 6-1 lead when Cody Webber hit a two-out pinch-hit double to left field which drove in Gibbs and Jeremiah.  Jeremiah reached on a two-out double and Gibbs was hit by a pitch.
 
Chico State added an insurance run in the eighth to increase its lead to 7-1.
 
The Wildcats had 14 hits on the day with Jeremiah going 4-for-4 and Myles Dempsey going 3-for-5. 
 
Ryan DeJesus (0-2) recorded the loss in the start for the Gators, pitching 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs, striking out two and walking no one.
 
Dillon Meyer had three of the Gators' six hits as he went 3-for-4.
 
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow morning with a doubleheader at Maloney Field.  First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 11am.  The series will conclude this Saturday, March 30 with a single game starting at 11am at Maloney Field.
