Flores Walk-off Double Earns Gators' Split in DH with Toros

SAN FRANCISCOMiguel Flores hit a two-out double to right center that drove in Grady Espinosa with the game-winning run in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader to give SF State the 6-5 extra-inning win.  Cal State Dominguez Hills (18-18, 14-13 CCAA) came back to win the night cap 7-4 as the two teams split this afternoon's doubleheader at Maloney Field.
 
David Steininger opened up the doubleheader with a lead-off triple and scored on a ground out by Kevin Logan to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. 
 
SF State took the lead in its half of the first as the Gators scored two runs on two Toros' errors.  Grady Espinosa tripled with one out and scored on a single by Miguel Flores.  Flores advanced to second on an errant throw and went to third on a passed ball.  The senior shortstop scored on another error by the Toros to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
 
The visitors tied the game in their half of the second.  Carlos Avila led off the inning with a double and scored on a suicide squeeze by Danny Haley. 
 
The score remained tied until the Toro fifth as Logan hit a two-out triple to score Steininger, who reached on a two-out walk.  The Toros added two more runs in the sixth as they took a 5-2 lead.
 
The Gators scored three runs in their half of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5.  Mark Lindsay was hit by a pitch with one out and went to second on a single by Carter LoudJoe Chedid's single loaded the bases.  Then with two outs, Dillon Meyer hit a 1-0 pitch to left center to drive in Lindsay and Loud and make the score 5-4 Toros.  Espinosa then hit the third pitch he saw for a single to left field to drive in Chedid with the tying-run.
 
The score remained tied at 5-5 until the Gator half of the 11th.  Espinosa singled up the middle with two outs and Flores drove in the game-winning run with a double to right center to give the Gators the 6-5 come-from-behind win.
 
Espinosa finished game one 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored.  Flores and Loud each had two hits while Flores also drove in two runs. 
 
Nolan Sheridan (5-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching two scoreless innings giving up just one hit.  Taylor Wade pitched the previous four innings of scoreless relief, giving up just one hit and striking out four. 
 
Joseph Perez recorded the loss for the Toros in relief, giving up two hits and a run in 2.1 innings while striking out three.  Logan drove in two runs and was 2-for-5 to lead the Cal State Dominguez Hills' hitting attack.
 
In the night cap, the Toros took a 4-0 lead as they scored two runs each in the second and third innings.
 
SF State (13-26, 10-21 CCAA) cut the lead to 4-1 when Lamb was hit with one-out and the bases loaded which brought in Meyer with the Gators' first run. 
 
The Toros added an insurance run in the fourth inning on a pinch-hit RBI single by Bubby Rossman to increase their lead to 5-1. 
 
The Gators once again cut the deficit with a two-run fourth inning.  Loud led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Randy Villa reached on a fielder's choice.  Chedid hit a bunt single to load the bases.  With two outs, Villa and Loud scored when Espinosa reached on a Toro error.  Perez came in relief to get the next Gator batter to fly out and end the inning and strand three runners on base.
 
Cal State Dominguez Hills added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 7-3 lead into the seventh inning of the night cap.
 
Espinosa and Flores led off the Gator seventh with back-to-back singles.  Lamb reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second.  Loud drove in Flores with a two-out single to short.  Perez then got the final Gator to ground out to preserve the 7-4 Toro win.
 
Perez (2-2) picked up the win in relief for the guests, going 3.1 innings, giving up six hits and one run.  Zack Malik fell to 2-6 for SF State as he recorded the loss in the start.
 
Four Gators had two hits apiece in Espinosa, Flores, Loud and Chedid.
 
The Gators will look to salvage a split in the series tomorrow as the two teams will play for the fourth and final game of this weekend's series.  First pitch is scheduled for 11am PDT at SF State's Maloney Field.
