Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO --- SF State came out strong in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, grabbing a shutout win over Cal State Monterey Bay 3-0. The Gators (17-27, 9-19 CCAA) couldn't carry the momentum over for the nightcap, however, falling 5-1 to the Otters (26-21, 14-14 CCAA).
Kelsey Murakami led the Gators with a 3-for-6 showing at the plate with one run.
Ashley Huff also laid down three hits on the day, followed by
Lucy Fernandez with two hits and a run.
Heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning with neither team on the board yet, Fernandez opened the inning with a double to right center. Murakami joined Fernandez on base, taking advantage of an Otter error, and
Marisa Andrade loaded the bases with a single through the left side.
Sarah Catania stepped into the batter's box and hit a shot to center to reach first safely and score Fernandez from third, but the Otters were able to grab the first out on the play.
Jennifer Lewis knocked a blooper to right, scoring Murakami, and Huff found the hole at right field to load the bases once again, still with one out on the board.
Gabby Reta laid down a grounder inside the infield, forcing CSUMB's short stop to try to make the play at home, but Catania slid safely into home plate to put the Gators up 3-0.
Courtney Gravel hit a rocket to right field, looking to add more damage to the inning, but the Otter outfielder came up with the ball to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh and needing to hold the Otters, the Gators keyed down on defense, including a crucial leaping catch from Gravel to end the inning, to keep Cal State Monterey Bay off the bases and secure the 3-0 victory.
Cal State Monterey Bay took the first run of the nightcap in the top of the second off two hits to take an early 1-0 lead, and added four more runs in the fourth off four hits and two SF State errors to go up 5-0.
Determined to put something together on offense, the Gators ended the scoreless streak in the bottom of the sixth off two hits. Huff opened the inning with a lead-off single up the middle, but was out on a fielder's choice that put Reta on first. Reta moved up a spot to second on a wild pitch and scored as
Kylie Grabowski sent a basehit up the middle. The Gators, however, couldn't string together more offense in their last two chances at the plate, falling 5-1 to CSUMB.
SF State is back home for another California Collegiate Athletic Association four-game series, hosting Cal State San Bernardino for a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
