Coyotes Defeat Gators, 8-2

Justin Lamb Hit His First Home Run As a Gator This Afternoon

SAN BERNARDINO –Cal State San Bernardino took game one of this weekend's four game series at Fiscalini Field with the visiting SF State Gators 8-2 in thanks to a complete game outing by Ken Kissell.
 
Aaron Beckley's run scoring single with one out drove in Curtis Cassise with the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning.  Cassise reached on a Gator error and went to third on a two-base throwing error by the visitors. 
 
Cal State San Bernardino took a 2-0 lead on a run scoring single by Christian Gomez in the third inning.  Gomez's single drove in Steven Chagolla after he reached on a lead-off double to left field. 
 
SF State (13-28, 10-23 CCAA) cut the Coyote lead in half in its half of the fifth.  Joe Chedid had a lead-off single and went to second on a bunt single by AJ Almaraz.  Chedid and Almaraz each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Dillon Meyer.  Then with two outs and runners at the corners, Miguel Flores hit the second pitch he saw for a single to left field to drive in Almaraz to cut the deficit to 2-1.
 
The Gators tied the score at 2-2 as Justin Lamb led off the sixth inning with a home run to left field. 
 
Cal State San Bernardino retook the lead for good in its half of the sixth inning as the Coyotes scored 5 runs on just two hits and one error to take a 7-2 lead. 
 
Beckley reached base on a lead-off walk and went to second on a Billy Hamilton sacrifice.  Then he went to third on a ground out by Remington Miller.  Jake Pilkerton and Michael Castello each walked to load the bases with two outs.  All three scored when Trevor McMaster reached base on a two-base error to give the hosts a 5-2 lead.  They added two more runs in the inning to take a 7-2 lead.
 
The Coyotes added an insurance run in the 7th on a RBI single by McMaster with two outs that scored Miller.  The senior outfielder had a lead-off double and went to third on a ground out. 
 
Kissell (3-5) held the Gators to just one hit in the final two innings as he picked up the win.  He gave up 9 hits and two runs while striking out two and walking two. 
 
The Coyotes (14-23, 8-21) had 13 hits on the day led by Beckley's three. 
 
Peter Reyes (1-6) recorded the loss for the Gators.  The sophomore righty pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 6 runs (one earned) and walking three. 
 
Flores led the Gators' hitting attack going 3-for-4 with a RBI. 
 
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.  The series will conclude with a 11am starting single game on Sunday morning in San Bernardino.
