Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO –SF State Gators' softball team swept a conference doubleheader this afternoon from the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 5-0 and 5-4 (8) in thanks to the duo of
Marisa Ibarra and
Gabby Reta. Ibarra (14-10) pitched a complete game two-hit shutout in game one while Reta drove in
Ashley Huff with the game-winning run on a two-out single in the night cap.
Ibarra in game one pitched her 23
rd complete game and eighth complete game shutout as she struck out three batters and walked no one. She did not give up a hit until the Coyote sixth when Darian Manuz reached on a bunt single with one out.
The Gators took a 2-0 lead after their half of the first inning. Reta walked with one out and went to second on a single by
Courtney Gravel. She came around to score on a single by
Kylie Grabowski. Gravel scored on a single up the middle by
Lucy Fernandez.
SF State added three more runs in the fourth as
Cara Spence opened up the inning reaching first as she was hit by a pitch. She went to second on a ground out by
Kelsey Murakami. Then with one out went to third on a single by
Jennifer Lewis. Lewis stole second which Spence scored on as the ball went into center field. With two outs,
Ashley Huff walked to put runners on first and second. Reta singled home Lewis and Huff scored on the throw.
Cal State San Bernardino tried to break the shutout in its half of the seventh. The Coyotes (17-31, 11-19 CCAA had runners on first and second with one out, but Ibarra induced the last two batters to ground and pop out to preserve the shutout victory.
Cal State San Bernardino jumped out on top in the night cap with a three-run third inning. Alyssa Ramos and Na'Tavia Lee had back to back one-out singles. With two outs, Charlotte Galzote loaded the bases with an infield hit. Alyssa Flores then drove home both Ramos and lee with a two-out single to right field. Then the next batter, Monica Ferguson, hit a run scoring single to left field to drove in the third run of the inning in to give the Coyotes a 3-0 lead.
SF State (19-27, 11-19 CCAA) came right back in the bottom of the third and tie dhte game at 3-3. Lewis had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice by
Sarah Catania. She scored on a one-out single by Reta after Huff walked. Gravel drove in Huff and Reta scored on a Coyote throwing error to tie the game at 3-3.
The visitors retook the lead in its half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Roberts which drove in Victoria Lievanos to give Cal State San Bernardino a 4-3 lead.
The score remained 4-3 Coyotes until the Gator half of the sixth inning. Lewis led off the inning with a single to right field. She went to third on a Catania sacrifice bunt. Huff walked to put runners at first and second with one out. She scored when Reta reached base on a Coyote error to tie the game at 4-4.
The two teams played a scoreless seventh inning and
Ali Garcia (2-0) pitch a scoreless eighth to set up the heroics for the bottom of the eighth. Huff tripled down the left field line with two outs. She then scored on Reta's single to right field to give the Gators the 5-4 extra-inning victory and the doubleheader sweep.
Garcia pitched 5 innings of relief, giving up two hits and one unearned run.
Emily Gibson started the game and went three innings, giving up five hits and three runs striking out two and walking one.
Reta and Gravel each had two hits to lead the way for the Gators. Reta also drove in two runs while Huff and Lewis each scored twice.
The two teams will conclude this weekend's four-game series with an 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow morning at SF State's Softball Field.
