Gators Sweep CSUSB 8-4 and 10-5

SAN BERNARDINO –SF State Gators swept a doubleheader from the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes 8-4 and 10-5 this afternoon at San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field.  SF State pounded out 23 hits in the two games while scoring 18 times to give the visitors the sweep. 
 
The Gators took a 6-0 lead after three innings in game one as they scored two runs in the second and four more in the third. 
 
Justin Lamb and Mark Lindsay had back-to-back singles to lead off the second inning. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Carter Loud.  With one out and the count 0-2, Randy Villa hit a single to center field to drive in Lamb.  Lindsay scored on a one-out sacrifice bunt by AJ Almaraz.
 
In the Gator third, Grady Espinosa walked with one out and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt.  He went to third on a Miguel Flores' infield single.  Lamb drove in Espinosa when he reached on another error by the Coyotes.  Lindsay then singled home Flores.  Lamb and Lindsay reached advanced a base on another Loud sacrifice bunt.  Villa walked to load the bases for Almaraz.  The senior infielder hit the fourth pitch he saw for a two-run single that brought in Lamb and Lindsay to give the Gators a 6-0 lead. 
 
Ryan DeJesus (2-2) had a shutout going into the Coyote fifth inning.  Billy Hamilton walked to lead off the inning and went to second with two outs when Trevor McMaster reached on a Gator error.  Nick Massari walked to load the bases.  Steven Chagolla hit a two-run two-out single to right field which drove in Hamilton and McMaster to cut the Gator lead to 6-2.  The next Coyote flew out to right field to end the rally.
 
Cal State San Bernardino (14-25, 8-23 CCAA) cut the Gator lead to 6-4 with a two-run seventh inning.  Jake Pilkerton and McMaster each walked with one out.  They stole third and second base respectively which Pilkerton scored on an errant throw.  McMaster scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Massari. 
 
SF State (15-28, 12-23 CCAA) added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.  Dillon Meyer had a lead-off single and advanced to second on an errant throw.  Meyer went to third on a ground out.  Flores walked with one out and Meyer scored when Lamb had a sacrifice bunt.  Lindsay drove in Flores with a single to give SF State an 8-4 lead.
 
Jack Veronin pitched a scoreless ninth as he did in the eighth to notch his first save as a Gator.  The junior right-handed pitcher just walked one batter in the final two innings for the guests.
 
DeJesus pitched 7 innings of one-hit ball, giving up four unearned runs, striking out three and walking four. 
 
Lindsay led the Gators' offense going 4-for-5 driving in two runs and scoring twice.  Almaraz drove in three Gator runs on two hits and Villa also had two hits. 
 
Taylor Valentine (1-4) recorded the loss for the Coyotes.  
 
The Gators took the night cap 10-5 as they pounded out 11 hits with three players have two hits apiece in AJ Pianto, Meyer and Flores.  Eric Watts (1-2) picked up the win in relief, pitching three innings, giving up four hits and two runs striking out four and walking two. 
 
Zack Malik, started the game for the guests, pitching four innings, giving up two hits and three runs (one earned) and walking one in the no-decision. 
 
The Gators started the scoring early as they put three runs on the boards in the top of the first inning.  Meyer and Espinosa each were hit by a pitch to lead off the game.  Flores walked to load the bases.  Lamb then singled to right field to drive in Meyer.  Espinosa scored on a balk and Flores scored on a wild pitch to give SF State a 3-0 lead.
 
The visitors added another run in the second when Lamb walked with the bases loaded to bring in Almaraz to increase the Gators' lead to 4-0.  Almaraz led off the inning with a single.  He went to second on a sacrifice by Danny Souza.  Meyer singled to put runners on the corners with one out.  The junior outfielder stole second.  With two outs, Flores walked to load the bases.  Then Lamb walked to bring in Almaraz. 
 
The Coyotes cut the Gator lead to 4-2 with a two-run third inning.  They cut the deficit to 4-3 on a Michael Castello two-out single to right field that brought in McMaster in the fourth.
 
The score remained 4-3 Gators until their half of the sixth inning.  SF State scored six runs in that inning on five hits and one error.  Meyer had a one-out single and stole second for his 12th stolen base of the season.  He went to third when Espinosa reached on an error.  They both scored on a one-out triple by Flores. 
 
Flores then scored on a balk.  Lamb walked still with one out.  He went to second on a Lindsay single.  Loud walked to load the bases which then Pianto drove in Lamb on a single to center.  Then with two outs, Souza hit a two-run single to drive in Loud and Lindsay to give the Gators a 10-3 lead.
 
Cal State San Bernardino scored two runs in the sixth to cut the Gator lead to 10-5.
 
Watts shutdown the hosts in the seventh to preserver the 10-5 Gator win.
 
The two teams will conclude the series tomorrow morning at San Bernardino's Fiscalini Field with a single nine-inning game.  First pitch is scheduled for 11am.
