Coyotes steal extra-inning victory from Gators

Grady Espinosa had two hits at Cal State San Bernardino, including his second homer of the season.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- Despite taking leads throughout the game, SF State couldn't hold off Cal State San Bernardino, surrendering the game-winning run in the 10th inning to fall 6-5. The Gators  out-hit the Coyotes (15-25, 9-23 CCAA), but committed costly errors to settle for a series 2-2 split with the home team.

Grady Espinosa led the Gators at the plate with a 2-for-5 showing, scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Justin Lamb went 2-for-2 in the batter's box, reaching on base with a walk and a rogue pitch to the body, and finished the day with a run and two RBIs.

Nolan Sheridan pitched nine innings on the mound for the Gators, striking out six batters and surrendering five hits. Jack Veronin came in relief and surrendered one earned run in the 10th to suffer the loss.

The Gators (15-29, 12-24 CCAA) opened with a strong first inning, plating three runs in their first chance at bat. Dillon Meyer led the inning off with a single and was joined on base with a knock past the Coyotes' diving shortstop. The pair advanced to second and third as CSUSB grabbed the first putout and was sent in as Lamb found a hole in left, allowing the two runners to score.

Lindsay's gapper between Cal State San Bernardino's shortstop and third baseman pushed Lamb to a better scoring position at third. Carter Loud stepped up to the plate a hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Lamb to tag up and put the Gators up 3-0.

The Coyotes put themselves on the board in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Gator error to cut SF State's lead to 3-1.

With two outs in the top of the fourth, A.J. Almaraz looked to put insurance runs in the Gators' column, sneaking a double past the third baseman up the left line to start a two-out rally. SF State couldn't send him home, however, trying to hold on to a 3-1 lead.

The lead didn't last long though, as the Coyotes tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Aaron Beckley blasted a long ball to right field with a runner on to send in the tying runs.

Espinosa put the game back in the Gators' hands with a home run of his own in the eighth, sending it over the left field fence. Miguel Flores kept the inning going with a solid shot up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lamb. Loud took a free walk to first on ball four to join Flores on base, but the pair were left stranded as Michael Castello made a diving catch to end the inning.

The Coyotes answered right back to tie the game at 4-4 off an RBI double from Remington Miller on one out, but SF State got out of the inning with a ground double play before CSUSB could do any more damage.

Heading into the ninth inning, neither team could plate a go-ahead run as the defenses took the batters down in order to force the game into extra innings.

In the 10th, Flores took a walk to first to put the go-ahead run on base with one out and Lamb battled to get a base hit through the left side, advancing Flores to second. Mark Lindsay took advantage of a costly Coyote error, allowing Flores to put the Gators up 5-4 with one out.

Trying to tack on an insurance run, Loud laid down a bunt but CSUSB grabbed Lamb out at the plate for the second out. With runners on first and second, Curtis Cassise snagged a line drive to end the inning and send the home team to the plate with pressure to score.

Pinch hitter Billy Hamilton started the do-or-die inning with a hard-hop single and Josh Herrera took over running for him. A sacrifice bunt advanced Herrera to second, putting the tying run closer to home. Almaraz fielded a grounder, keeping an eye on Herrera at second, hurling it over to Randy Villa at first for the second out.

Needing just one more out, Veronin surrendered a walk to put Coyote runners on first and second, and Miller made contact to send a hit to left, but Espinosa couldn't make a diving catch to allow the tying run in. With runners at first and second, Andrew Harrison hit a hard ball to short, but Flores couldn't field it cleanly to get the force out at second, giving the game-winning runner the green light in to lift the Coyotes 6-5 over the Gators.

SF State returns home for its final stand of the season, facing Cal State East Bay in a four-game CCAA series. The Pioneers will host the Friday and Sunday contests, with the Gators getting Saturday's doubleheader, which will also honor seniors from both teams
