Gators Rally Falls Short In 5-3 Loss at East Bay

HAYWARD , Calif.— SF State Gators' baseball team's rally from a 3-0 deficit fell short this afternoon as they lost 5-3 to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers (28-15, 18-15 CCAA) at Pioneer Field in Hayward, Calif.  Matt Fontaine pitched the complete game victory for the Pioneers en route to his fifth win of the season.  The Gators pounded out 11 hits on the day paced by Dillon Meyer's three hit performance.
 
The game was scoreless until the Pioneer half of the third inning.  Erin Miravalles reached on a one-out error by SF State.  He stole second and then Brandon Alexander walked which Miravalles went to third on the wild pitch.  With two outs, Charlie Sharrer hit a two-run double to left field to drive in both Miravalles and Alexander with the game's first run.  Sharrer scored on a single by Bryson Makamura as the hosts took a 3-0 lead.
 
SF State cut into the Pioneer lead in its half of the fifth inning.  AJ Almaraz hit a two-out double down the left field line and scored on a single by Dillon Meyer.
 
The Pioneers came right back with two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Alexander, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, singled to right field with one out.  He went to second when Kyle Zozaya walked.  Alexander advanced to third on a fly out to center field by Sharrer.  The right fielder scored on a two-out infield single by Nakamura.  Zozaya gave Cal State East Bay a 5-1 lead on a run scoring single by David Castillo. 

The Gators rallied with a two-run inning in the seventh to cut the hosts' lead to 5-3.  AJ Pianto had a lead-off double and scored on a two-out single by Meyer which Meyer advanced to third on a throwing error.  The junior center fielder scored on a single by Grady Espinosa.  Fontaine picked off Espinosa at first to end the Gator rally.
 
SF State had another chance to tie the game in its half of the ninth inning.  Randy Villa hit a pinch-hit infield single with two outs.  Danny Souza came in run for Villa and then Almaraz singled through the left side to put runners on first and second. Fontaine recorded his eighth strikeout of the game to preserve the 5-3 Pioneer win.
 
The Pioneers had 12 hits in the game with Nakamura having three of those hits.  Alexander, Sharrer and Castillo each had multiple-hit with two hits apiece.  Fontaine (5-1) gave up 11 hits and three runs (two earned), striking out 8 and walking no one.
 
Peter Reyes (1-7) recorded the loss in the start for the Gators.  He pitched 7 innings, giving up 11 hits and five runs (two earned), striking out four and walking two. 
 
Besides Meyer's three hits, Justin Lamb and Almaraz each had two hits. 
 
SF State (15-30, 12-25 CCAA) will return home tomorrow morning at 11am when the series moves to Maloney Field for a conference doubleheader in San Francisco. 
 
Between the games of the doubleheader, the Gators will recognize both teams' seniors including their eight in AJ Almaraz, Ryan DeJesus, Miguel Flores, Justin Lamb, Trae Lopez, AJ Pianto, Randy Villa and Eric Watts in a ceremony. 
 
The Gators will end their 2013 season this Sunday back in Hayward, Calif., for an 11am starting game with the Pioneers.
