Pioneers Spoil Gators' Senior Day With Sweep of Doubleheader

SAN FRANCISCO---  The Cal State State East Bay Pioneers spoiled the SF State Gators' Senior Day by sweeping a doubleheader 8-4 (11) and 5-0 this afternoon at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State.  The Pioneers (30-15, 20-15 CCAA) scored four runs in the 11th to win the opener and Michael Pope (8-2) pitched a complete game one-hit shutout in the nightcap.
 
Cal State East Bay took a 1-0 lead in the first game when Eren Miravalles scored on a ground out by Jordan Wilder after reaching base on a one-out triple to right center in the top of the third inning.  SF State tied in its half of the third as Danny Souza scored on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Flores.  Souza had a lead-off single and went to second on a Dillon Meyer sacrifice.  He went to third on an infield single by Grady Espinosa and scored on Flores' sacrifice fly.
 
The Gators took a 3-1 lead with a two-run fifth inning.  AJ Almaraz walked with one out and stole second.  Almaraz scored on a two-out single to center field by Meyer which the junior outfielder advanced to second on the throw.  Meyer stole third and scored on an infield single by Espinosa.
 
The score remained 3-1 Gators until the Pioneer seventh.  Zac Chuvala had a lead-off single and went to second when Wilder walked with one-out.  With two outs, Charlie Sharrer hit a two-run double to left center to tie the game at 3-3.
 
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the Pioneer tenth.  Brandon Alexander and David Castillo had back-to-back one-out singles.  Alexander scored on David Elzig's single to left to give the guests at 4-3 lead.
 
SF State (15-32, 12-27 CCAA) came right back in its half of the tenth and tied the game at 4-4.  Espinosa had a lead-off single and scored on a Flores' single to center field which the Pioneers misplayed.  With the game-winning run at second and no one out, the Pioneers got the next two Gator batters to fly out and strike out.  Carter Loud then had an infield single, but the Gators could not capitalize as Ben O'Bryan induced the next hitter to ground out.
 
Chuvala and Miravalles had back to back lead-off singles in the Pioneer 11th.  They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Wilder.  Chuvala scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Zozaya.  Cal State East Bay added three more runs in the inning to take an 8-4 lead.
 
In SF State's half of the 11th, Souza walked with one out but O'Bryan induced the next hitter to ground into a game ending double play. 
 
O'Bryan (4-3) picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings of relief giving up one hit, striking out one and walking one.  Sean Becker recorded the no-decision, going 9 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs, striking out 6 and walking one.
 
Cal State East Bay had 18 hits on the day with four different batters with three hits apiece in Sharrer, Alexander, Castillo and Elzig.
 
Jack Veronin (1-5) recorded the loss in relief for SF State, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and five runs.  Ryan DeJesus started the game for the Gators, pitching 9 innings, giving up 10 hits and three runs, striking out four and walking two.
 
SF State managed 13 hits in game one with Loud and Espinosa each with three hits. 
Michael Pope pitched a one-hit complete game shutout in the night cap.  He did not give up a hit until the Gator seventh when Randy Villa hit a one-out single to right field to break-up the no-hitter.  Pope also struck out six batters and walked four while hitting three Gator batters.
 
Cal State East Bay scored all the runs that Pope needed with a four-run fifth inning which was keyed by a two-run single by Zozaya.  The Pioneers added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Miravalles which scored Chris Porter.  The Pioneer catcher had a lead-off double and went to third on a sacrifice by Chuvala.
 
Zozaya had two hits and drove in two runs while Miravalles also had two hits for the visitors.
 
Eric Watts (1-3) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up six hits and four runs, striking out one and walking three.
 
In between games the Gators recognized both teams' seniors including their own in AJ Almaraz, Ryan DeJesus, Miguel Flores, Justin Lamb, Trae Lopez, AJ Pianto, Randy Villa and Eric Watts.
 
SF State will travel to Hayward, Calif., tomorrow morning for its regular season finale at Pioneer Field against Cal State East Bay.  First pitch is scheduled for 11am.
