LA JOLLA, Calif.— SF State started its four-game weekend road conference series with a 4-1 victory over the UC San Diego Tritons (17-16, 12-13 CCAA) at Triton Ballpark this evening in La Jolla, Calif. The Gators used some timely hitting and the pitching of
Ryan DeJesus,
Eric Watts and
Trae Lopez to key their road win over the Tritons.
The Gators (11-22, 8-17 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning as
Justin Lamb led off the inning with a double. He then stole third with two outs and scored on an infield single by
Joe Chedid.
UC San Diego tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Richard Seigel scored on a one-out double to right center by Nick LaFace. Seigel reached base on a one-out single.
The game remained tied until the Gator half of the sixth inning. Lamb once again led off the inning this time with an infield single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by
AJ Pianto.
Mark Lindsay singled to right field which put runners on the corners with just one out.
Carter Loud then hit a triple to drive in both Lamb and Lindsay to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Loud scored on a ground out by Chedid, who finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs driven in, as SF State took a 4-1 lead.
The Tritons had a chance to cut into the Gator lead in their half of the seventh as Dillon Moyer led off the inning with a double, but was stranded as SF State starter
Ryan DeJesus retired the next three batters on two fly outs and a ground out.
UC San Diego had a mini-rally going in the bottom of the eighth inning as Tony Cruz had a one-out single but was left stranded there as
Trae Lopez came on in relief of Watts and induced two fly outs.
DeJesus pitched seven innings, giving up five hits and one run, striking out four and walking two as he improved to 1-2 on the season. Watts came on in relief in the eighth and pitched 0.1 scoreless innings giving up one hit. Lopez recorded his first save as he pitched 1.2 scoreless innings giving up no hits also and striking out one.
Five different Gators had two hits apiece including Chedid in
Miguel Flores, Lamb, Lindsay and Loud. Loud also had two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base while Lamb scored twice and also had a stolen base.
Ryan Goodbrand suffered the loss for the Tritons as he pitched 6 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs, striking out 7 and walking one.
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon for a doubleheader at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game with first pitch scheduled for 11am.
