Box Score 3 TURLOCK --- Returning to where they started the season on a high note, the SF State Gators couldn't get the same momentum going for them as they dropped the first three games of the Tournament of Champions hosted by Cal State Stanislaus on Friday. SF State first dropped a 1-0 loss to California Baptist, before losing a heartbreaking 7-6 result to Chaminade. To conclude the day, the Gators fell 4-0 to Hawaii-Hilo to stand 13-23 on the season.
Kelsey Murakami led the batting for the Gators, finishing the day with a 5-for-9 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and adding an RBI. Defensively, Murakami grabbed eight putouts, along with five assists, to add to her overall performance. From the circle,
Marisa Ibarra finished the day with 11 strikeouts in 10.2 innings of play, while only surrendering one run.
Game 1: Cal Baptist 1, SF State 0
To open the TOC tournament, neither team could put anything on the board in the first two innings, even though Cal Baptist started knocking on the door in the top of the second. With bases loaded and no outs, the Gators buckled down on defense with Ibarra tossing the first putout.
Jennifer Lewis then snagged a line drive and threw the ball to
Lucy Fernandez at third to complete the double play, catching the runner off the base.
CBU broke through in the third, plating one run off two hits to take a 1-0 lead. The Gators tried to respond, coming close a couple times, but couldn't see runners round to home plate to drop the first game of the day with the 1-0 loss.
Game 2: Chaminade 7, SF State 6
Looking to turn the day around, SF State got on board first in its second game to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With two outs, Murakami's shot sailed right over Chaminade's shortstop's glove for a base hit.
Sarah Catania followed with a single through the left side to put runners on first and second. Murakami scored the go-ahead run, taking advantage of a Silversword error in the process.
The lead didn't last long, however, as Chaminade scored three runs in the next half inning off four hits and a Gator error. SF State found a response in the top of the fifth off two errors, cutting the Silverswords' lead to one run at 3-2. Once again, however, Chaminade added runs in its next chance at bat to take a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning.
Fernandez opened the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second in the next play, as the Silverswords grabbed the first out. Murakami drilled a base hit to center, pushing Fernandez to third, and proceeded to steal second.
Marisa Andrade stepped up to the plate and blasted a double RBI single to center to put the game at 5-4 in favor of Chaminade.
Heading into the top of the seventh, the Gators needed to score runs to keep the game alive.
Gabby Reta grabbed a lead-off single through the right side and
Courtney Gravel joined her on base off a Silversword error.
Kylie Grabowski laid down a sacrifice bunt, getting the job done as both runners advanced a base. Fernandez sent the ball deep to left, but the Chaminade outfielder grabbed it in the air for the out, but Reta tagged up to score the tying run.
Tied at 5-5, Murakami snuck a base hit past the first baseman down the right field line to score the go-ahead run, giving the Gators a 6-5 lead.
Needing just three outs to claim the victory, the Gators picked up the first two with a diving stop by Murakami and a routine grounder from Gravel. One out away, SF State couldn't find the last out, allowing the Silverswords to score both the tying and winning run and walk away with the 7-6 win.
Game 3: Hawaii Hilo 4, SF State 0
The Gators struggled to post hits in their final contest of the game, with
Ashley Huff grabbing three of SF State's five hits. Murakami and Ibarra also laid hits down, but it wasn't enough to overturn a 4-0 hole the Gators found themselves in early. The Vulcans scored one run in the opening inning and added another three in the third.
SF State got a chance in the sixth with two runners on. With one out, Huff beat the shortstop's throw to first for her third base hit of the day and advanced to second off a shot from Ibarra. Finding herself on the flip side of the pitching circle, Ibarra drilled a base hit through a gap on the left side, but the Vulcans grabbed the next two outs before the Gators could get a rally going. Hawaii Hilo held onto the lead through the final inning to claim the 4-0 victory.
Tournament of Champions continues pool play on Saturday with the Gators taking on National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. II No. 21-ranked Grand Canyon at 12:15 p.m. and Dominican University of California at 4:30 p.m. Once pool play has completed, bracket play will begin Sunday with a single elimination.
