UCSD Sweeps Gators 9-6 and 7-5

Grady Espinosa Had Five Hits Including Two Extra-Base Hits in the Gators' DH at UCSD This Afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif.— After winning 4-1 in game one of this weekend's four-game series in La Jolla, Calif., it was the visiting SF State Gators being swept by the UC San Diego Tritons this afternoon 9-6 and 7-5 in today's CCAA doubleheader.  Grady Espinosa led the Gators' offensive attack going 5-for-8, scoring five times and driving in a run.
 
The Gators took a 1-0 lead in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader as AJ Pianto hit a two-out single that drove in Grady Espinosa, who reached base on a one-out single, in the top of the first inning.
 
UC San Diego tied the game in its half  of the second on a two-out single by Sam Michaels that drove in Dillon Moyer after he hit a two-out double to right center.
 
SF State retook the lead with a two-run fourth inning.  Justin Lamb had a lead-off single and went to third on a double by Pianto.  Lamb scored on a single by Mark Lindsay and Pianto gave the Gators a 3-1 lead when he scored on a ground out by the Gators.
 
The Tritons came back in their half of the fourth and took a 5-3 lead with a four-run inning with Garrett Tuck's two-run one-out double to left center that scored Moyer and Justin Rahn.
 
The Gators tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run fifth inning.  Espinosa started the inning for the visitors with a two-out double to left center.  He scored on an infield single by Miguel Flores.  Flores went to second on a single by Lamb and scored on a Pianto single up the middle to tie the game at 5-5.
 
The score remained tied at 5-5 until the Triton sixth inning.  Danny Susdorf started the scoring for the hosts with a one-out single that drove in Garrett Tuck.  The Tritons added two more runs after Tuck crossing home to increase their lead to 8-5.
 
UC San Diego added another insurance run in the eighth inning to take a 9-5 lead.
 
SF State had a two-out rally in the ninth.  Espinosa walked and scored on a two-out triple by Flores.  Lamb then walked to put runners on the corner but the Tritons induced the last Gator batter to fly out to preserve the 9-6 UC San Diego victory.
 
Each team pounded out 11 hits with Susdorf, Moyer and Michaels leading the way for the Tritons each with two hits.  Pianto and Lamb each had three hits for the Gators. 
 
Watts (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Gators.  Chad Rieser (1-1) picked up the win in relief for UC San Diego.
 
UC San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the night cap on a two-out two-run single by Susdorf that drove in Justin Rahn and Tuck.  Rahn reached on a lead-off single and went to second on a one-out walk to Tuck. Then with two outs, Liske had an infield single to load the bases. Susdorf then hit a 1-2 pitch for a two-run single to center field. 
 
The Tritons added two insurance runs in the third to increase their lead to 4-0.
 
SF State tied the Triton lead in half with two-run fifth inning.  Dillon Meyer reached first with a two-out walk on Espinosa's second triple of the season.  Espinos scored on a run scoring single by Flores.  Cruz got the next Gator to fly out to end the inning.
 
Richard Seigel added more insurance runs with a bases-clearing two-out triple in the bottom of the sixth to give the hosts a 7-2 lead.  Liske, Susdorf and Andrew Hobson all reached bases on walks and Seigel hit the second pitch he saw for a three-run triple down the right field line.
 
The Gators would go away in the top of the seventh.  Joe Chedid hit a pinch hit single to lead off the top of the inning and went to second on a pinch-hit single by Jordan Mullins.  Espinosa singled to load the bases.  Chedid and Mullins scored on a double by Flores to cut the deficit to 7-4. 
 
Espinosa then scored on a wild pitch which Flores advanced to third still with one out.  The Triton relievers got the next two Gators to ground out and fly out as they held on for the 7-5 game two win. 
 
Zack Malik (2-5) suffered the loss for the Gators while Troy Cruz (3-1) picked up the win for the Tritons.  Dan Kolodin recorded his second save as he pitched 0.2 scoreless innings.
 
SF State (11-24, 8-19 CCCAA) had 10 hits in the night cap led by Espinosa who went 3 for 4. 
 
The Tritons (19-16, 14-13 CCAA) had 9 hits led by Seigel's two hits.
 
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with a single game at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. First pitch is scheduled for 11am PDT as the Gators will look to salvage a split in the series.
