Gators Win Series Finale 11-3 at UCSD

Nolan Sheridan Improved to 4-0 As He Struck out 6, Walked Three While Giving up One Earned Run in SF State's 11-3 Win

LA JOLLA, Calif.—The visiting SF Gators scored a season high 11 runs as they rebounded from yesterday's doubleheader sweep to defeat the UC San Diego Tritons 11-3 this afternoon in La Jolla, Calif.  With the win, the Gators split the weekend series with the Tritons 2-2.  SF State won the series opener 4-1 on Friday evening.   Grady Espinosa had a career day as a Gator with four hits (including two doubles), scoring three runs and driving in two. 
 
Nolan Sheridan (4-0) picked up the win in his just his first start of the season.  The freshman righty went 7 innings, giving up four hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out six and walking one. 
 
AJ Pianto put the Gators on the board first with a two-out run scoring single to left center that drove in Grady Espinosa to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.  Espinosa, who finished the day 4-for-6, had a one-out single and went to third on a two-out single by Justin Lamb
 
SF State batted around in its half of the second inning as the Gators scored six runs on four hits and took advantage of four walks.  Carter Loud and Joe Chedid led off the innings with back to back walks.  Loud stole third and scored on a bunt single by AJ Almaraz.  Chedid and Almaraz each advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Dillon Meyer.  Espinosa then hit the first pitch he saw for a two-run double to right field to score Chedid and Almaraz.
 
Miguel Flores and Lamb walked to load the bases for Pianto.  The senior first baseman/designated hitter gave the Gators a 5-0 lead as he reached on a fielder's choice which scored Espinosa.  Mark Lindsay and Loud each hit two-out singles that drove in Flores and Pianto as the Gators took a 7-0 lead.
 
Richard Seigel broke up Nolan Sheridan's shutout with a two-out home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Gators' lead to 7-1
 
Miguel Flores hit a two-run home run, his second of the season, in the top of the 6th to give the Gators a 9-1 lead.  Espinosa lead off the inning with a single to right field and scored on Flores' home run to left field. 
 
The Tritons (19-17, 14-14 CCAA) scored an unearned run in their half of the seventh to cut the visitors' lead to 9-2.  SF State came right back and added insurance runs in its half of the eighth inning. 
 
Espinosa had a lead-off double and went to second on a single by Flores.  Lamb reached on a fielder's choice which put runners on first and second with one out.  Pinch-hitter Randy Villa was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Flores scored when Lindsay also was hit by a pitch.  Then with two outs, Chedid hit the first pitch he saw to drive in Lamb and give the Gators an 11-2 lead heading into the final two innings.
 
UC San Diego added another run in its half of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Nick LaFace which scored Danny Susdorf to cut the deficit to 11-3.
 
Trae Lopez pitched the 8th inning for the Gators (12-24, 9-19 CCAA) giving up one run on one hit, while striking out one and walking one.  Callan Dawson pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up two hits and stranding one runner. 
 
Besides Espinosa's four hits, three other Gator had multiple hit days in Flores, Lindsay and Almaraz as they each had two hits.
 
Justin Rahn recorded the loss for the Tritons falling to 0-1.

SF State will return home this Friday, April 12 as the Gators begin a four-game series with Cal State Dominguez Hills at Maloney Field.  The two teams will play a single nine-inning game this Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3pm PDT.  The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 with an 11am PDT starting time.  The Gators and Toros will conclude their series with an 11am starting single nine-inning game a week from today, April 14.
