Seawolves Hold On To Defeat Gators, 1-0

SAN FRANCISCO --- Sonoma State's Brenton Frame connected on what proved to be the game winner in the 21st minute off a cross from Aaron Glover to give the Seawolves the 1-0 road conference victory over the SF State Gators.

"This is a learning experience for 90% of our team," said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. "We were not clean enough and technically not sharp in the first half, but the second half was better." "Sonoma State was the better team today and we will bounce back this Sunday."

The match was evenly played with Sonoma State holding the 15-14 advantage in shots, but each team recording five shots on goal apiece.

Sonoma State's Taylor Varnadore had the first shot on goal attempt of the match stopped by the Gators' Colt Reichl in the 13th minute. The Seawolves had two more chances in the next minute to take the early 1-0 lead, but Nico Spann's shot went wide left and then Brenton Frame's shot was stopped by Reichl.

The score remained scoreless until the 21st minute, when Frame connected on his first goal off a cross from Aaron Glover to give Sonoma State the 1-0 lead.

SF State (1-2, 0-1 CCAA) its only shot on goal attempt stopped by the Seawolves' Beau Diaz as Zachary Pinnix's attempt was snagged by Sonoma State's Seawolves' goalkeeper in the 36th minute to send the match into halftime with the guests leading 1-0.

In the second half, the Gators came out with a little edge as Sam Merrritt's shot attempt went wide left in the 63rd minute. Then two minutes later, Diaz recorded one of his five saves on the day as he stopped Merritt's attempt to tie the match.

Reichl, who had five saves, made two key saves in the 69th minute to keep the score at 1-0 Sonoma State.

The Gators' Jorge Valadas had his shot on goal stopped by Diaz in the 78th minute as did Merritt in the 81st minute and Jakob Velega in the 82nd minute.

Then with three minutes left, Merritt's attempt to tie the match sailed high as the Seawolves held on for the 1-0 win.

With the win, Sonoma State improved to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.

SF State will return home this Sunday, September 15 at 11:30am, when the Gators host Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks lost 5-3 at Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon.
