SAN FRANCISCO --- The SF State Gators and the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks played to a 1-1 double overtime tie this afternoon in a CCAA match-up at SF State's Cox Stadium. Colt Reichl recorded a season high 8 saves including two in the final 13 seconds to preserve the tie for the Gators.
"Our team is battling through some adversity with some injuries," said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. "We had better chances than Humboldt State in the overtime periods, but we could not cross the ball into the net."
SF State outshot the Lumberjacks 25-19 including 18-14 in the final 65 minutes. The Gators (1-2-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) also held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Humboldt State (2-1-1, 0-1-1 CCAA) had the first shot on goal attempt in the match off the foot of Braxton Griffin stopped by the Gators' Reichl in the fourth minute.
SF State had a chance in the 13th minute to take the 1-0 lead, but the Lumberjacks' Javier Torres stopped Nick Harb's attempt of giving the Gators the lead.
The match remained scoreless until the 31st minute, when the Gators were called for a foul in the penalty box which Zach Hammond connected on his fourth goal of the season to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
SF State had two chances to tie the match in the final six minutes stopped by Torres, one in the 39th minute off the foot of Emmanuel Serrano and the other in the 42nd minute off the foot of Gabriel Flores. The match went into halftime with a Gator 1-0 deficit.
The hosts had a couple of chances early in the second half to tie the game go either wide or high. Then in the 70th minute, SF State had three more chances to tie the match but Colt Dimond's shot was blocked, Jakob Velega's attempt was stopped by the Lumberjack defense and Sam Merritt's attempt was also blocked.
Then in the 78th minute, Sam Merritt connected on a missed shot by Velega to tie the match at 1-1.
SF State had its final chance to take the lead sail high off the foot of Andrew Ogilvy in the 83rd minute. The match went into the extra periods.
In the first overtime period, Ogilvy had a chance to be the hero sail wide left in the 92nd minute.
Humboldt State had three chances be blocked by the Gator defense in the 93rd minute. Then with 40 seconds left in the first 10-minute period, Merritt's shot sailed high.
In the second 10-minute sudden death period, SF State had three chances for the golden goal but all either sailed high or were stopped by Torres. The first one off the foot of Velega sailed high and then Davis Brady's shot was stopped by Torres. In the 106th minute, Velega's attempt was stopped by Torres.
The Gators had another chance off a corner kick by Jorge Valadas hit the cross bar in the 106th minute.
In the final three minutes, Reichl recorded possibly his three biggest saves of the season including two off the foot of Griffin in the final ten seconds.
Torres had 6 saves in goal for the Lumberjacks.
SF State will continue its home stand this Friday, September 20th at 12:30pm, when the Gators host Cal State L.A.
