Sam Merritt that went to
Chris Behroozian and then to Ogilvy in the 22
nd minute for what proved to be the game-winner in the Gators' 1-0 win over the 7
th ranked Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (4-1, 2-1 CCAA) this afternoon at Cox Stadium.
“The goal was a bang bang play and we were fortunate to get the ball in to the net,” said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. “Davis (Brady) came up big for us today and Colt (Reichl) continued his consistent play.”
Colt Reichl recorded a season high 11 saves en route to his second shutout of the season. The Gators (2-2-1, 1-1-1 CCAA) also snapped the visiting Golden Eagles' four-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles outshot the host 26-11 including 11-1 in shots on goal attempts. Cal State L.A. also held the 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Andre Bissmark had a chance to give the Golden Eagles the early lead in the 18
th minute, but Reichl recorded one of his 11 saves.
Four minutes later, the Golden Eagles were called for a foul which
Sam Merritt had the free kick sent into the box to Ogilvy to give SF State a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles attempted to tie the match in the 31
st minute, but Abel Feferi's attempt was stopped by Reichl.
Reichl came up big twice in the final minutes of the first half as he stopped Teferi's and Joshua Cortez's attempt to tie the match at 1-1.
Cal State L.A. had several attempts to tie the match in the second half including three in the final four minutes. The first one was blocked by the Gator defense off the foot of Daniel Rodriguez. Then less than 10 seconds later in the 87
th minute, Rodriguez had his attempt stopped by Reichl. The visitors had more chance, but Reichl stopped Sigifredo Torres' shot on goal attempt to preserve the 1-0 Gator victory.
SF State will host Cal State Dominguez Hills this Sunday, Sept. 22 at 11:30am at Cox Stadium. The Toros defeated #25 Cal State Monterey Bay 3-1 this afternoon in Seaside, Calif.
