SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros (4-0-2, 2-0-2 CCAA) rallied back from a 1-0 deficit in the final 15 minutes to score three unanswered goals to defeat the SF State Gators 3-1 in a CCAA match-up at SF State's Cox Stadium. Aaron Salazar was the key component in all three Toros' goals as he had two assists and a goal.
"I liked how we competed today," said SF State head coach Joe Hunter. "We need to be reminded to stay mature and focused during the match." "Hopefully we can use this match to provide motivation for the rest of the season."
The first half ended in a scoreless tie with their being a combined 12 shots including four shots on goal attempts.
Jorge Valadas recorded the first shot on goal attempt of the match, but he was stopped by the Toros' Trey Mitchell in the 11th minute. Valadas had another chance to give the Gators the early lead, but is attempt sailed wide left.
Cal State Dominguez Hills had two attempts in the final five minutes of the half to take the lead, but Jose Vaca's attempt was blocked by the Gators' defense in the 37th minute. Then in the 41st minute, SF State's Colt Reichl recorded one of his 9 saves by stopping Salazar's attempt.
The match remained scoreless until the 63:36 mark of the second half, when Sam Merritt connected on a ball from Matias Rodriguez from 8 yards out and knocked the ball into the bottom left of the net. With the goal, Merritt gave the Gators a 1-0 lead and connected on his second goal of the season.
The Toros' Alejand Covarrubias had his attempt to the match at 1-1 stopped by Reichl in the 69th minute.
SF State (2-3-1, 1-2-1 CCAA) looked to increase its lead, but Andrew Ogilvy's shot sailed wide left as did Hayden Roberts' shot in the 70th minute.
Six minutes later, the Toros tied the match at 1-1 when Miguel Vazquez connected on a cross from Salazar.
Heriberto Ponce then tried to give the visitors the 2-1 lead, but his attempt was stopped by Reichl. SF State's Valadas had a chance to give the Gators the lead, but his attempt was stopped by the visitors' Trey Mitchell.
Cal State Dominguez Hills drove right down the pitch after that attempt and Ponce connected on a cross from Salazar to give the Toros a 2-1 lead at the 79:53 mark.
The Toros sealed the match in the 88th minute as Salazar connected on a pass from Covarrubias to give the visitors the 3-1 victory.
Mitchell had two saves in goal for the Toros, who outshot SF State 27-9 including 13-2 in shot on goal attempts.
SF State will be back on the road for a three-game road trip beginning with this Friday, Sept. 27 in Turlock, Calif., for a 7pm starting match with Cal State Stanislaus.
