CARSON--- The SF State Gators volleyball team went 2-0 on their first weekend on the road in the CCAA as they defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in four sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25) this evening at the Torodome in Carson, Calif.
Meagan Wright led the way for the Gators (7-5, 2-2 CCAA) with 16 kills and 7 total blocks.
"We are very pleased to come out of the road trip with two wins," said SF State head coach
Jill Muhe. "Everyone pulled together for the win this evening."
Besides Wright's performance,
Kaileen Mejia and
Jazmine Williams also starred for the visitors each with 8 kills. Mejia hit for a .389 percentage and Williams had a .350 percentage.
SF State had 10 total team blocks with
Kelly Ostello recording five and Williams added four to Wright's 7.
Three Gators also recorded double digits in digs with
Jaclyn Clark leading the way with 14 followed by
Jessica Nicerio (13) and
Jacquie Brice with 10. Brice also had 39 assists to record her fifth double-double of the season and third straight.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-5, 0-4 CCAA) were paced by Alijah Gunsaulus' 18 kills and 15 dig performance.
The Toros jumped out to a 5-2 set one lead and increased their lead to 10-6 on back to back SF State hitting errors.
SF State took the lead for the first time of the set on an error by the Toros, 10-9 and never let go of the lead.
A kill by Wright gave SF State a 20-16 lead, but the Toros took advantage of two hitting errors by the Gators to cut the deficit to just two (21-19).
Another Wright kill and three straight errors by the Toros gave SF State the set 25-19.
The next set was evenly played with the Gators' 5-2 advantage being the biggest lead in the set.
The Toros' Alijah Gunsaulus' kill tied the set at 23-23 and then back to back kills by Abbey Prusas gave the hosts the set 25-23 and tied the match at 1-1.
After the intermission, the Gators scored four of the set's first five points capped by a
Katie Judd kill to give them a 4-1 lead.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took an 11-9 lead on a Gunsaulus kill and then the Toros increased their lead to 15-11.
SF State scored 8 of the next 12 points to take a 19-18 lead with five of those points coming with
Kayce Skocko serving. She had an ace and Ostello recorded two kills during that span.
The Gators increased their lead to 23-19 on a hitting error by the hosts. Then they finished off the set on back-to-back kills by Wright to take a 2-1 lead in the match and to take the set 25-22.
In the fourth set, Abbey Prusa's kill gave the hosts a 6-4 lead. SF state came right back and scored the next five points capped by a Mejia kill to take a 9-6 advantage.
The Toros came right back though and retook the lead 12-11 on a Gunsaulus kill. The hosts increased their margin to 15-12 on another Gunsaulus kill.
Mejia's kill gave SF State a 20-19 lead, but the Toros would not go away as they retook the lead at 24-23 on a Gator hitting error.
After the Gators called a timeout, Wright and Mejia had back to back kills to give the visitors a 25-24 lead. They did not hold that long as Prusa tied the set at 25-25 on a kill. SF State finished the set and match out as the Toros had two hitting errors to give the visitors the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.
SF State will return home this Friday, October 4 as the Gators host Chico State in a 7pm starting match at The Swamp. The next evening, SF State will host Cal State Stanislaus in the Gators' annual “Dig For A Cure” match. That match is also scheduled to start at 7pm at The Swamp.
