Pioneers Hold Off Gators, 1-0

Jorge Valadas Saw His Chance To Tie The Game For The Gators Sail High in the Final Minutes of SF State's 1-0 Loss at CSUEB
Box Score  HAYWARD---  The Cal State East Bay Pioneers recorded their second straight win this afternoon as they defeated the visiting SF State Gators 1-0 at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward, Calif.  Jesus Magana scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Pioneers in the 29th minute off a ball from Kellen Crow and Conley Perry.
 
Even though the Gators loss, SF State (3-4-1, 2-3-1 CCAA) is in a tie for second place in the CCAA North Division with Cal State Monterey Bay, two points behind first place Sonoma State.   
 
“Give credit to Cal State East Bay they came out and outplayed us this afternoon,” said SF State head coach Joe Hunter.  “We just did not have the same intensity we did on Friday evening, just shows the guys they need to come out sharp each and every match in this conference.”
 
Chris Behroozian looked to give the Gators the early lead with just 47 seconds in the match, but Cal State East Bay's Bryce Bookhamer recorded his only save of the day.
 
Cal State East Bay (2-6, 2-4 CCAA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 29th minute as Jesus Magana connected on a pass from Kellen Crow and Conley Perry to give the Pioneers the 1-0 lead.
 
The Pioneers had a chance to double their lead in the 39th minute, but Rica Guerra's shot was blocked by the Gator defense to send the match into halftime with the hosts leading 1-0.
 
SF State's Colt Reichl recorded one of his four saves by stopping Crow's shot on goal attempt just two minutes into the second half.
 
The visitors had three chances in the final minutes to tie the match and send into overtime, but could not get the ball into the back of the net.  The first one came in the 80th minute, but Jakob Velega's shot attempt was blocked.  Then with just six minutes left, Jorge Valadas had his attempt to tie the match sail wide.  With just four minutes left, the Gators saw their final chance to tie the match sail wide again this time off the foot of James Aguirre.
 
Cal State East Bay held a 14-4 advantage in shot attempts including 4-1 in shot on goal attempts.  The Gators did hold a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
SF State will finish off its three-game road trip this Friday, October 4 at 12:30pm in Seaside, Calif., as the Gators face Cal State Monterey Bay.  They will return home one week from today, when SF State hosts Chico State at Cox Stadium in an 11:30am starting match.
