Gators Defeat Coyotes, 59-48, in Defensive Battle

Brianna Harden Had a Career High 19 rebounds to Go with Her 11 Points in the Gators' win over CSUSB
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO--  The SF State Gators improved to 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA with a 59-48 win over the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.  With the win, the Gators improve to 7-0 at home and will host UC San Diego at 5:30pm tomorrow evening.  Lauren Varney had 16 points to lead the Gators while Brianna Harden had 11 points and 19 rebounds off the bench.  

"Tonight was a will of attrition," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  "CSUSB has to be one of the most athletic teams in our conference."  "I know it was going to be a defensive battle and this evening we were able to match their defensive intensity."
 
SF State held the Coyotes to just 25% shooting from the field including just 14% from three-point land.  Besides Varney and Harden scoring in double digits, Angela Van Sickel added 13 points for the victors.
 
Trinidee Trice had 11 points, 7 rebounds and four assists to lead the Coyotes (3-9, 2-7 CCAA) whiel Tayllor Gipson chipped in 10 points.
 
Cal State San Bernardino had its only lead, 3-2 in the first three minutes of the game.  The Gators' Kimmie Fung hit a three on the hosts' next possession as they took the lead for good.
 
SF State increased its lead to 21-11 on three made free throws by Van Sickel at the eight minute mark fo the first half.
 
The Coyotes cut the Gator lead to 21-13, but SF State outscored its guests 9-4 in the next four minutes to take a 30-17 lead. 
 
The visitors finished the half outscoring SF State 9-4 to cut the Gator lead to 34-26 heading into the locker room.
 
A tip-in by Varney in the first two minutes of the new stanza gave the Gators a 42-28 lead. 
 
Cal State Bernardino would not go away as they cut the deficit to eight, five different times in the next 14 minutes including the last one on a Gipson jumper, 52-44, with 5:10 to go in the game.
 
Van Sickel's jumper gave the Gators a 56-44 lead with just 3:45 on the clock as the hosts held on for the 59-46 victory.
 
"Both Lauren (Varney) and Angela (Van Sickel) played huge and Brianna (Harden) was outstanding on the glass," added Wallace.
 
SF State will continue its brief two-game home stand with a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with UC San Diego tomorrow evening at The Swamp.  The Tritons defeated Sonoma State 74-62 in Rohnert Park this evening in a CCAA contest.
