Box Score HAYWARD, Calif--- The Cal State East Bay Pioneers (12-7, 9-3 CCAA) shot 56% from the field including 62% in the first half to key their 74-54 conference win over the visiting SF State Gators. Brianna Terrance paced the Pioneers with 16 points.
Angela Van Sickel led SF State with 14 points and
Lauren Varney chipped in 12 points and had 8 rebounds.
"Lack of energy and commitment to defense in the first half was a disappointment this evening for us," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "We have to make sure we get refocused and committed to playing quality basketball going forward."
The Pioneers, who are in second place in the CCAA, held the Gators to just 33% shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers including by 9 steals (four from Micah Walker).
Besides Terrance's 16 points, Sarah Finlay had 12 points off the bench for the hosts while Danielle Peacon had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Walker chipped in 10 points.
SF State (10-8, 6-6 CCAA) forced the Pioneers into 24 turnovers, but was out-rebounded 40-28.
Stephanie Lopez's three capped an opening 9-0 run for Cal State East Bay. The hosts increased their lead to 28-8 at the 9:28 mark of the first half on a lay-up by Sarah Finlay.
The Gators closed the deficit to 34-20 on a Varney lay-up with 5:22 left in the half, but the Pioneers finished the half outscoring their guests 13-6 to take a 47-26 lead into the locker room.
Cal State East Bay started the second half on a 6-2 run to take a 53-28 lead.
The Pioneers increased their lead to 68-37 on a Lopez lay-up with eight minutes on the clock as they cruised to a 74-54 victory.
The Gators are in eighth place in the CCAA, one game out of fifth place which is currently held by Chico State, Cal State L.A., and Cal State Stanislaus.
SF State will continue its four-game road trip this coming week for a pair of games on CA-Route 99. The Gators will travel to Turlock this Friday, January 31 for a 5:30pm scheduled game with Cal State Stanislaus. SF State defeated Cal State Stanislaus 96-81 on December 7 in San Francisco. The Gators will then travel north on 99 to Chico, for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Chico State on Saturday, February 1. The Wildcats lost 82-65 to SF State on December 6 at San Francisco.
