Cal State L.A. Holds Off Gators, 78-71

LOS ANGELES.—  The Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles (8-1, 5-0 CCAA) used a 15-5 run in the final three minutes of this evening's game with the visiting SF State Gators to key their 78-71 home conference win at the Eagles' Nest in Los Angeles.  Quinton Watkins paced the Golden Eagles, who are tied for first place in the CCAA with #19 Cal State San Bernardino, with a game high 26 points.
 
"To win in the CCAA on the road, you have to play 40 minutes tonight we just played 32," said SF State head coach Paul Trevor.  "Quinton Watkins buried some key three's down the stretch for them."
 
The Gators built a ten point lead late in the first half as Bennie Rhodes' three gave the visitors a 29-19 lead with five minutes to go in the first stanza.
 
The Golden Eagles finished the half outscoring their guests 11-6 to cut the Gator lead to 35-30 heading into the locker room.
 
Cal State L.A. came out on fire in the beginning of the second half as they took a 46-40 lead, six minutes into the new half.
 
The Gators would not go away as they went on an 8-0 run capped by two made free throws by Brandon Tatum to take a 48-46 lead with 9:48 on the clock.
 
Cal State L.A. went on a run of its own as the hosts took a 55-50 lead on two made free throws by Joshua Munzon. 
 
The Gators came right back and went on a 9-0 run to take a 59-55 lead capped by an old-fashioned three-point play by Overton with 5:38 left in regulation.
 
The Golden Eagles tied the game for the eight time of the game on a dunk by Solomon Singer. 
 
SF State (5-3, 3-2 CCAA) then took a 66-63 lead with 3:24 left when Will Overton, Jr. drained a three.  After Overton's three, Watkins was fouled and made both free throws to cut the Gator lead to 66-65. 
 
The Gators missed their next shot and Watkins gave the hosts the lead, 68-66, as he drained a three with 2:37 to go in the game. 
 
Overton was fouled on the Gators' next possession and made both of his attempts from the line to tie the game at 68-68. 
 
Watkins again came through for the Golden Eagles as he connected on his fourth three to give the hosts the lead for good 71-68. 
 
SF State had two chances to tie the game, but missed both of them and the Golden Eagles finished the game going 7-for-9 from the charity stripe down the stretch to secure the 78-71 conference win.
 
Besides Watkins' game high 26 points, James Tillman had 16 points and 12 rebounds while Davon Potts added 12 points.  Munzon added 11 points off the bench including going 7-for-8 from the line.  
 
Cal State L.A. shot 48% from the field including 46% from three-point land and went 20-for-26 from the charity stripe.
 
Nefi Perdomo chipped in 14 points for the Gators, who will return to the court tomorrow evening in Carson, Calif.  The Gators will continue their five-game road trip with a 7:30pm PT with Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Torodome.  The Toros defeated Sonoma State 74-65 this evening in Carson.
