Box Score LOS ANGELES— SF State outscored its hosts 44-25 in the first half and forced 21 turnovers by the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles to key its 80-57 road conference win at the Eagles' Nest this evening in Los Angeles. With the win, the Gators improve to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the CCAA and in a four-way tie for first place.
"This evening, we played inspired basketball on both ends of the floor," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "Defensively, we were engaged against a quality Cal State L.A. team." "Anytime you can get a road win against one of the top teams in the conference, you have to be pleased."
Katie Batlin paced the Gators with a game high 18 points as she went 8 for 11 from the field. Batlin also grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 6 assists and recorded three steals to lead the way for the visitors.
Brianna Harden added 10 points off the bench for the Gators.
SF State held the Gators to just 40% shooting from the field including 35% from three-point land. Kaija Powell led the way for the Golden Eagles (6-3, 3-2 CCAA) with 15 points.
The Gators also forced 21 turnovers including 10 by steals of which four came from
Jennifer Le. 22 of the Gators' points came off of Golden Eagles while their bench outscored their hosts 40-27.
The Gators took a 15-13 lead in the first six minutes of the game and then went on a 28-5 run to take a 43-18 lead with 4:56 to go in the first half. During that span, SF State held Cal State L.A. scoreless for five minutes in which it increased its lead to 28-15.
Cal State L.A. closed out the half cutting the Gator lead to 44-25 on two made free throws by Destinee Fountain heading into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles came out of the half on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to 49-36 capped by a Paige Melville lay-up.
The Gators did not let the Golden Eagles get any closer as they increased their lead to 68-42 on a three by
Leticia Galarza with 7:29 to go in the game. SF State cruised to the 80-57 win.
"I am hopeful we are able play with the same passion tomorrow evening against another quality team in Cal State Dominguez Hills," added Wallace.
SF State will continue its five-game road trip tomorrow evening in Carson, Calif., for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Toros defeated Sonoma State 72-62 this evening in Carson.
