SF State Grapplers to Host Simpson This Saturday at 1pm

SAN FRANCISCO – Coming off a stellar weekend in which the SF State Gators defeated #11 Mercyhurst College 21-15 and captured the 2014 Menlo Invitational, the Gators will return to the mat this Saturday, January 11 at 1pm when they host Simpson University in a non-conference dual at the Swamp.  The Red Hawks are currently tied for 14th in the nation in NAIA. 
 
The Gators improved to 2-1 in dual meets with their 21-15 win over the visiting Mercyhurst College Lakers out of Erie, Penn.  The Lakers fell to 6-1 in dual meets and are currently ranked 11th in the nation in NCAA Division II. 
 
SF State won the first five matches of the dual starting with Zach Jimenez's win by a 9-4 decision at 184.  Also winning by decision for the Gators were Andrew Reggi (197), Hildelv Manzur (285), Marc Collier (125) and Isaiah Hurtado (133) to give the Gators a 15-0 lead heading into the final five matches.
 
The Lakers captured the next three matches to cut into the Gator lead, 15-9.  SF State's Vicente Aboytes sealed the win for the hosts with a win by fall at 165 at 2:46 to increase the Gator lead to 21-9.  The Lakers' August Mizia won the final match of the day by fall at 174 to make the final 21-15 Gators. 
 
Then on Saturday in Atherton, Calif., the Gators captured the 2014 Menlo College Invitational as they placed in the top four in all but two of the weight classes and captured four of the weight classes by placing first.  Isaiah Hurtado (133), Zach Jimenez (184), Andrew Reggi (197) and Hildelv Manzur (285) all placed first in their respective weight classes while Marc Collier (125) and Vicente Aboytes (165) placed second.  Conrad Snell (157) finished fourth in his bracket.
 
11 Gators have posted winning records this season including 9 with double digits in wins led by Isaiah Hurtado's 15-5 record.  Andrew Reggi and Zach Jimenez are 14-5 and 14-6 respectively while three Gators have 12 wins in Anthony Figueroa (12-8), Dylan Phillipy (12-8) and Tavis Ino (12-8).  Hildelv Manzur is 11-9 and two grapplers have 10 wins in Vicente Aboytes (10-6) and Jordan Gurrola (10-5) while Conrad Snell and Daniel Flores are 8-5 and 6-3 respectively.
 
On November 21 in Redding, Calif., the Gators defeated Simpson 33-12 as they captured eight of the ten weight classes.  Snell started the match off with a win by fall at 0:26, which was one of his team high 8 wins by fall. 
 
The Red Hawks are currently tied for 14th in the nation in NAIA with three wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in their weight classes in AJ Valles (1st-133), Brady Beamon (7th-174) and Austin Lobsinger (10th-285).
 
After Saturday's dual with Simpson, the Gators will travel to Kearney, Neb., to participate in the UNK Duals on Saturday, January 18.  SF State will face Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) opponents Adams State, Chadron State and Western State along with Northern State.  The Gators will return home on Saturday, January 25 at 1pm, when they host Stanford University.
