POMONA, Calif.---The 24
th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (9-2, 6-1 CCAA) outscored the visiting SF State Gators 12-2 in the final six minutes of this evening's CCAA game at Kellogg Gym in Pomona to key the their 73-60 win. Jada Blackwell paced the Broncos with 20 points and 13 rebounds as she was one of four players to score in double digits.
"We were out competed on the boards as Cal Poly Pomona's size gave us problems this evening," said SF State head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. "It is virtually impossible to win a game when you are out-rebounded by 14 on the road coupled by -7 on offensive boards."
Cal Poly Pomona out-rebounded the Gators 54-38 and held its guest to just 33% shooting from the field including 33% from three-point land.
Besides Blackwell's 20 points, JJ Judge added 17 points and 10 rebounds and Ariel Marsh had 18 points. Ashley Levitt chipped in 8 points and 10 rebounds for the victors.
The first half saw six ties and six lead changes with the biggest lead being a Cal Poly Pomona 16-11 lead at the 9:30 mark of the first half.
The Gators took a 20-18 lead on a three by
Kimmie Fung with just 8:20 to go in the first stanza, but the Broncos outscored SF State 9-4 in the next three minutes to take a 27-24 lead.
Angela Van Sickel's three capped a 5-0 run by the Gators as they retook the lead, 29-27.
Cal Poly Pomona finished the half outscoring the Gators 8-1 as the Broncos took a 35-30 lead into the locker room.
The beginning of the second half saw the Broncos increase their lead to 44-37 on a three by Judge.
The Broncos held a 54-46 lead at the 11:38 mark, but
Lauren Varney's lay-up capped a 9-2 run by the Gators to cut the deficit to 56-55 with 8:37 on the clock.
Cal Poly Pomona followed that Gator run with a 5-0 run to increase its lead to 61-55 in the next minute.
Van Sickel's free throws cut the Bronco lead to 61-58, but the Broncos held their visitors scoreless in the next five minutes to take a 73-58 lead with just two minutes to go in the game.

Katie Batlin free throw stopped the Bronco run as she cut the Gator deficit to 73-59, which was a little too late as the hosts held on for a 73-60 conference win.
Van Sickel paced the Gators with 15 points as she connected on four of her attempts from beyond the arc. Batlin recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also had six assists and three steals for the guests.
Michelle Sutton had 11 points off the bench for SF State, who will travel to Arcata, Calif., this Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 5:30pm scheduled game with Humboldt State.
"This is the last leg of the road trip, our goal is to play better on the boards against another quality team in Humboldt State," added Wallace.
Humboldt State defeated Sonoma State 75-69 this evening in a conference game in Arcata.
SF State (8-5, 4-3 CCAA) is now in seventh place, a half-game out of fourth place while Cal Poly Pomona is all alone in first place. Humboldt State heads into its game with the Gators in eighth place in the CCAA.
