SAN FRANCISCO – SF State's wrestling team will travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., for the Gators' 2014-15 dual opener with the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Gators are coming off a strong showing at the U21 JC/College Open they hosted this past weekend. SF State had six placers including three second place finishers in
Sam Alnassiri,
Jordan Gurrola and
Tavis Ino.
SF State finished its 2013-14 regular season with an 8-5 record including 2-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Gators had one All-American in
Isaiah Hurtado and two Gators that were National Qualifiers in
Zach Jimenez and
Andrew Reggi. Reggi is back for his senior season and is currently eighth in the nation at 197.
The Gators also had three wrestlers that finished in third place in the U21 JC/College Open in Johnny Costa,
Dylan Furtado and
Brandon Vu. Last season, the Gators lost to Cal Poly at home on the third tie breaker which is based on total points (61-56).
The Mustangs finished last year with a 3-9 record in dual meets and finished tied for 63
rd at the NCAA Division I National Championships. They opened up the season last week at the Clarion Open, which Colt Shorts finished in second at 157. Cal Poly also sent a group of grapplers to the U21 JC/College Open at SF State. Travis Berridge captured the 165 weight class while Jason DelaCruz finished second at 133.
After Saturday's dual, the Gators will return to the mat on Sunday, November 16 as they will participate in the Roadrunner Open in Fresno, Calif.
