Box Score 2 San Francisco, Calif. – The SF State baseball team earned a split with Central Washington Saturday afternoon at The Swamp at Maloney Field. SFSU took game one of the day by a final of 4-1, while the Wildcats took the second half of the twin billing by a final of 5-3.
Making his first start at SF State was junior
Preston Tarter (1-0) who went 5.0 plus innings, scattering five hits, one earned run, while allowing three walks and striking out three.
"Pretty positive day, the pitching was good our first time out, I thought Tarter threw very well in his Gator debut," said head coach
Mike Cummins. "We had some clutch hitting in the first game."
The Gators scored all four of their runs in game one on two out hits, the first coming off the bat of junior catcher
Mark Lindsay who went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Also joining Lindsey in the clutch two-out hitting was seniors
Carter Loud and
Trevor Diskin.
Help sealing the win was the work by the bullpen.
Joe Chedid entered the game in the top of the sixth with two on and no outs and got the Gators out of the jam unscathed, he went on to throw two more scoreless frames before turning the ball over to closer
Cory Davis who worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the win. Chedid went 3.0 complete, surrendering just one hit with three walks and two strike outs, while Davis allowed just one hit with a walk and a strike out.
Taking the loss for the Wildcats was starter Skye Adams (0-1). Adams went six plus innings, allowing six hits, three runs, two earned with two walks and four strike outs.
In the second game the Wildcats jumped out to and early 2-0 lead after
Nolan Sheridan (0-1) struggled early with command. A one out single and a two out bases loaded walk plated both runs. However, Sheridan escaped further damage and settled into a nice groove, retiring seven batters in a row, before being lifted in the top of the fourth inning.
For the afternoon Sheridan threw 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, five runs, all earned, with four walks and five strike outs. Coming out of the pen for the Gators was
Ryan Romero, making his SF State debut. Romero threw 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out four.
"Chedid and Davis pitched very well in relief, working out of some really tough jams the first time out," said Cummins. "I also really liked
Ryan Romero's outing, he pitched well in relief, kept us in the game. Defensively we played well, one or two more hits and we would have won both games today."
SF State scored a run in the first when
Dillon Meyer singled to start the game, he moved to second on a balk and eventually scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fourth, the Gators scored two runs to cut the lead to two, when
Garrett Heisinger led off the inning with a base hit to right field. Two batters later the Gators loaded the bases following a base hit by
Trevor Diskin and a walk by
Nick Jackson.
Fernando Escobar singled through the left side to plate Heisinger, Diskin scored on a fielder choice RBI off the bat of Meyer.
Earning the win in game two for Central Washington was starter Brandon Williams (1-0), who threw a complete game, going seven innings, scattering eight hits, three runs, all earned, with a walk and five strike outs.
The Gators return to action tomorrow when they play another double header against the Wildcats. First pitch for game one is at 11 am at Maloney Field.
