SAN FRANCISCO--- The 25th ranked Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (18-4, 16-2 CCAA) held the SF State Gators to just 28% shooting from the field en route to their 62-52 road victory at The Swamp this evening. Jordan Faison was one of four Broncos to score in double digits as he recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Will Overton, Jr. paced the Gators with 19 points and 9 rebounds.
"Cal Poly Pomona is one of the teams in the nation defensively and they challenge you," said SF State head coach
Paul Trevor. "You need to make your open shots and we did not tonight."
Besides Faison's double-double, Daniel Rodriguez had 12 points while Barry Bell and DeRonn Scott each chipped in 10 points for the visitors.
Overton had a game high 19 points for SF State and
Nefi Perdomo chipped in 11 points for the hosts.
SF State is now in a three-way tie for fourth place with Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State L.A. with two weeks left in the regular season. The Gators are one game ahead of UC San Diego who is in seventh place and three games behind third place Chico State.
Cal Poly Pomona built an early 11-6 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but the Gators outscored the Broncos 9-4 in the next five minute to tie the game at 15-15 on a
Calvin Otiono lay-up.
The Broncos built their lead to 22-17 on a three by Scott, but the Gators outscored Cal Poly Pomona 7-2 in the final four minutes to send the game into the half down just 24-22.
SF State took a 25-23 lead on a three by Perdomo in the first minute of the second half, but the Broncos retook the lead 30-29 at the 14:50 mark.
Perdomo's three gave the Gators a 34-33 one minute later, but the Broncos outscored their guests 14-2 in the next five minutes as they took a 47-36 lead a lead they would not relinquish.
SF State (12-9, 10-8 CCAA) did cut the deficit to 57-50 with under a minute on a tip-in by Overton, but the Broncos went four of six from the charity stripe as they held on for the 62-52 win.
"We need to learn from this loss as we to need to develop more of an inside presence against a team like Cal Poly Pomona," said Trevor. "I am proud of our guys as we competed for 40 minutes and finished this home stand 3-1."
SF State will now go on the road for the final time in the regular season with a pair of games at UC San Diego and No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino. The Gators will face UC San Diego this Friday, February 21 in La Jolla and Cal State San Bernardino a week from tonight in San Bernardino. Game times for both games are 7:30pm.
