SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators swept a pair of one-run games in a non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Central Washington Wildcats (4-4) this afternoon at Maloney Field to improve to 5-5 on the season. Junior reliever,
Cory Davis, picked up his fourth save and his first win as a Gator en route to the sweep while
Mark Lindsay and
Wes Carswell had the game-winning hits for the hosts.
"
Cory Davis along with Preston (Tarter) are two of our best pitchers right now," said SF State head coach
Mike Cummins. "Cory pitched seven scoreless innings of relief and did a great job for us today."
SF State won the opener 4-3 as
Taylor Wade (1-0) picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings of one-hit ball while striking out one. Davis came on in the ninth and recorded his fourth save as he pitched a scoreless inning and struck out one Wildcat.
The Wildcats took an 1-0 lead in the second, but the Gators scored two runs in their third to take a 2-1 lead.
Carter Loud was hit by a pitch with two outs and went to third on a single to right center by Carswell. Loud scored on a balk which Carswell advanced to second on. The freshman infielder then stole third and scored on a throwing error to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
Central Washington retook the lead with a two-run sixth inning. Jaykob Swells walked to lead off the inning and stole second. He advanced to third on a single by Cory Welch. With one out, Potter walked to load the bases. Sells scored on a throwing error by the Gators which Potter also scored on to give the Wildcats the 3-2 lead.
SF State tied the game in the seventh on back to back doubles by
Fernando Escobar and
Garrett Heisinger.
The Gators took the lead in the eighth inning. Loud had a lead-off single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carswell. He scored on a two-out single to right center by Lindsay to give the Gators a 4-3 lead.
Davis came on in relief in the top of the ninth and retired the Wildcats in order to preserve the 4-3 come-from-behind victory.
SF State had 7 hits in the opener with Lindsay leading the way with two hits.
Joel Johnson (0-1) recorded the loss in relief for the guests while Justen Weigel and Cameron Harper each had two hits.
In the night cap, the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Welch and Stephen McElroy had back to back singles to lead off the game. Weigel hit an infield single to load the bases. Kasey Bielec drove in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to center which scored Welch. Harper then drove in McElroy to give Central Washington a 2-0 lead.
SF State starter,
Trevor Diskin, settled down and pitched six scoreless innings of relief after the first inning, while striking out one and walking two.
The score remained 2-0 Wildcats, until the Gator sixth. Loud was hit by a pitch to lead off SF State's sixth inning. He went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Carswell. With two outs, Lindsay hit a 1-0 pitch up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.
The game remained 2-2 until the bottom of the 12
th inning. Escobar hit a lead-off single to center field. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Nick Jackson. Then with two outs, Carswell hit the third pitch he saw for a single through the left side which brought in Escobar with the game-winning run.
Davis (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings of six-hit relief pitching, while striking out two and walking one.
Brandon Williams (2-1) recorded the loss for Central Washington while McElroy had three hits in game two.
"Our team this season is pretty tight and today it showed as we battled back and found ways to win this doubleheader," added Cummins. "Wes (Carswell) played a big part of our success today and we need to continue moving forward continuing this weekend with Cal State Stanislaus."
Carswell finished the night cap, 3-for-6 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Heisinger and
Grady Espinosa also had two hits apiece for the hosts, who will return to the diamond this weekend as they begin conference play.
SF State will face Cal State Stanislaus in a four-game series beginning with a single nine-inning game at 2pm in Turlock, this Friday, February 21. The series will then move to SF State for an 11am starting doubleheader this Saturday, February 22. The four-game CCAA series will conclude in Turlock on Sunday, February 23 for a noon starting single game.
