The Gators scored a run in the top of the first and third inning, and briefly went ahead of the Toros after scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning to go up 5-3.
Unfortunately, the five runs was not enough as the Gators pitching had a rough outing, surrendering nine hits and six runs. Six of the nine hits the Toros collected were for extra bases, as CSUDH recorded four doubles, a triple and a home run.
Taking the loss for the Gators in game one was
Jenny Obbema (1-1) who came into the game in the top of the fifth with the score tied 5-5. She managed to get the Gators out of the game in the fifth inning but could not hold the Toros (10-6/4-2 CCAA) scoreless in the sixth. Obbema went 1.2 innings allowing two hits, one earned run in the losing effort.
CSU Dominguez Hills countered with Jamie Duran (6-4) who went the full seven innings. She was roughed up for eight hits on the afternoon and five runs, only two of which were earned with two walks and a strike out. SFSU's starter
Megan Clark went 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, four earned with two walks and a strike out.
In game two of the day the Gators received a nice pitching performance from starter
Courtney Dunkel (0-2) who held the Toros to just one run through three innings.
In the top of the fourth the Gators Lewis doubled to center field, her second double of the day. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rodriguez and scored on the sac fly off the bat of
Torrey Rook.
In the bottom half of the inning Dunkel's good fortune ran out, as she surrendered four runs in the inning. After surrendering four hits and hitting a batter Dunkel was relieved in favor of Obbema who got the Gators out of the inning.
For the day, Dunkel went 3.0 plus innings, surrendering nine hits, five runs, four of them earned. Obbema was sharp out of the pen, going 3.0 complete only allowing one hit with two walks.
Earning the win for the Toros in game two was starter Karen Peterson (4-1) who managed to go 5.2 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run with a walk and a strike out.
The Gators will return to action tomorrow when they look to even the series against the Toros. Game one of Saturday's double header is slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch with game two to follow after that.
