Gators Fall Victim to the long ball on Saturday

Senior Kelsey Murakami had three hits on the day for the Gators.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Carson, Calif. – The SF State softball team lost both halves of Saturday's double header against host Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Gators surrendered four home run on the day, falling 9-1 in both contests, with both games being decided by the fifth inning.

SF State (5-10/1-7 CCAA) were held to just two run and 12 hits on the day, while the Toros (12-6/5-2 CCAA) scored 18 runs on 23 hits, of those 23 hits 14 went for extra bases as CSUDH clubbed 10 doubles and four home runs on the afternoon, two by shortstop Adriana Sanchez.

In the first game of the day the Gators jumped out front for the early lead.  Junior shortstop Courtney Gravel led off the game with a base hit to left field.  Gravel moved over to second on a passed ball and over to third on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by first baseman Selina Rodriguez. 

Gravel came around to score on the sacrifice fly from red-hot sophomore center fielder Jennifer Lewis.  For Lewis it was her team-leading eighth RBI of the season.

SF State was held to just give hits by Toros starter Jamie Duran (7-4) went the distance, allowing just one unearned run with no walks and no strike outs.

CSUDH tied the game up in the bottom of the first when Adriana Sanchez connected on the first of her three hits on the day, a solo home run to right center.  Sanchez finished the afternoon with three legs of the cycle going 3-for-3 with the home run, a single and a double while scoring a run and driving in three.

The Gators threatened to tie the game in the top of the second when senior Kelsey Murakami led off the inning with the first of her two hits, she moved over to second on a sac bunt from Lucy Fernandez and moved to third on the base hit through the right side off the bat off Lyndsi Garcia.  Unfortunately the threat ended when Garcia was thrown out at second attempting to steal.

The Toros put the game away scoring four runs in the second which ended the day for Megan Clark (2-3) who lasted just two innings, surrendering four hits, five runs, all earned with one walk and a strike out.

Jenny Obbema came into the game on relief, she finished the game going 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, all earned, with a walk and no strike outs.

The Toros ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when back to back doubles scored the ninth run of the game giving CSUDH an eight run lead.

In the nightcap the Toros jumped all over the Gators pitching, as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, four coming off a grand slam from designated player Brittany Brenner.

Emily Gibson (2-4) took the loss as she was unable to get out of the first inning.  She threw 0.2 innings, surrendering six hits, seven runs, all earned with no walks and a strike out.

Courtney Dunkel replaced Gibson in the first and pitched the final 3.1 innings, scattering six hits, allowing two earned runs.

Earning the win was Alicia Paiz (1-1) who went the distance, scattering five hits and one earned run over five innings.
The Gators scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning, when Murakami started the rally with a single to left center.  She moved to second when Fernandez singled to shortstop, both runner moved over on a sacrifice bunt, Murakami scored on the single up the middle by catcher Kyle Grabowski.

The Gators will return to action next weekend when they host Cal State Stanislaus for a four game series starting Friday at 12:00 p.m.  It will be the Gators 2014 home opener.
