Gators Take Opening CCAA Series with 8-2 Series Finale Win at CSUS

TURLOCK, Calif.—  The SF State Gators (8-6, 3-1 CCAA) recorded season highs in hits (15) and runs (8)  to take the series finale over the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors, 8-2, this afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Field in Turlock.  With the victory, the Gators won the weekend four-game series, 3-1.
 
Nolan Sheridan (1-3) picked up the win in the start of the Gators as he pitched 5 innings, giving up 9 hits and one unearned run while striking out four and walking one.  Ryan Romero pitched three scoreless innings of relief, while giving up two hits, walking one and striking out two.  Cory Davis pitched the ninth, giving up two hits and one run and striking out three.
 
SF State had four Gators with multiple hit days in Carter Loud (4-for-5), Garrett Heisinger (2-for-5), Mark Lindsay (2-for-5) and Dillon Meyer (2-for-5).  Heisinger, Matt Vera and Fernando Escobar each drove in two runs and Lindsay and Danny Souza each  crossed home plate twice in the Gators' win.
 
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Eriksen Dickens scored on a two-out run scoring infield single by Skippy Ferreria.  Dickens lead off the inning reaching base on a fielding error and came around to score the game's first run. 
 
SF State took the lead for the first time with a two-run fourth inning.  Mark Lindsay reached base on wild pitch on a strike out to lead off the inning.  He went to second on another wild pitch.  Bryce Cherry singled to advance Lindsay to third and went on second on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Matt Vera walked to load the bases.  Freshman infielder Wes Carswell hit a 1-2 pitch through the left side to score Lindsay and tie the game at 1-1.  Still with the bases loaded and two outs,  Fernando Escobar was hit by a pitch on the first pitch he saw to bring in Cherry with go-ahead run. 
 
SF State broke the game open with a four-run eighth inning with Garrett Heisinger's two-run single up the middle being the big hit of the inning scoring Lindsay and Danny Souza
 
The guests added two more runs in their half of the ninth.  Souza drove in Meyer with a single up the middle after the senior outfielder had a lead-off single and stole his second base of the season.  Souza eventually score to give the Gators an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
 
The Warriors (5-6, 1-3 CCAA) scored a run in their half of the ninth as pinch-hitter Tanner Negrette hit a two-out double to left center to bring in James Heller.  Davis induced the last Warrior strike out to give the Gators the 8-2 victory.
 
Nick Ippolito (0-2) recorded the loss for the Warriors, pitching 6 innings of six hit ball while giving two runs and striking out five and walking two.
 
The Gators will return home to Maloney Field as they host Cal State San Bernardino with a four-game series this coming weekend, February 28-March 2.  The conference series will begin with a single nine-inning game this Friday, February 28 at 2pm.
